Experimental exhibition explores concept of place and creative process

Sequencing through Time and Place, an experimental three-part exhibition by artist Wendy Bredehoft, photographer Susan Moldenhauer and dancer Margaret Wilson examines three locations through their respective mediums of mixed media, photography and movement. Each part will be on view for one day at Gallery 211, 211 1st St., Laramie.

For more than three years, Bredehoft, Moldenhauer and Wilson have investigated landscape and place through their respective mediums while considering the intersections between intent, meaning and creative process. How does a dancer interpret or respond to the same landscape as a painter or photographer? How do artists transcend medium to respond simultaneously to each other's work? Can dance movement, still photography and studio art come together in a seamless consideration of place and creative process in a public forum?
Part 1: Ucross presents the work created in 2009 during a six-day residency at the Ucross Foundation in northeastern Wyoming. The formative stages of the artists’ work together was established during this residency. Themes such as shadow, line, space and scale were integral to the exploration of the creative process expressed in the divergent media of dance, photography and the graphic arts. It will be on view Wednesday, June 22.

Part 2: London is work made in the urban landscape of London where the vast space of the glazed-in British Museum became the work space for Bredehoft, Moldenhauer and Wilson to pursue their work together. It will be on view Saturday, June 25.

Part 3: Fort Laramie presents work created by the artists at the Fort Laramie Historic Site in eastern Wyoming where the concept of framing became a dominant focus of their work. It will be on view on Wednesday, June 29.

Gallery 211 is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day of the exhibition.

Moldenhauer (photographer) is the director and chief curator of the University of Wyoming Art Museum. Bredehoft (mixed media, pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor and Strappo) is the curator of eduation at the University of Wyoming Art Museum. Wilson (choreography and dance) is an associate professor of dance at the University of Wyoming and initiated the vertical dance program.

Cheyenne Artists Guild presents workshop by Pattie Andre May 21-22

This workshop is for portrait and landscape painters as well as still life artists. Using a still life set up gives the challenge of all kinds of edges – hard, soft, lost, transitional, value, temperature and much more. If you can paint a still life you can paint anything. Edges are a crucial element to a great painting.  Participants may use their chosen medium in oil, pastel or acrylic. 

Pattie has studied under many celebrated artists such as Richard Schmid, Kim English, Scott Christensen, Ralph Olberg, and Jim Wilcox. She is a Signature member of the Pastel Society of America and The National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society.  She is also an associate member of Oil Painters of America, Allied Artist, Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, and Tucson Plein Air Painters Society. Robert Harper conducts oil painting workshop March 31-April 2 at Casper Artists' Guild

Robert Harper will conduct an oil painting workshop on March 31-April 2 at the Casper Artists' Guild West Wind Gallery, 1040 W. 15th St., Casper. The cost is $150 for members, $210 for non-members. Registration deadline is Thursday, March 24. Participants must pay more than half of the registration price by March 24.

Robert Harper is a native of Montana and spent a large part of his life in rural Wyoming. In his teen years Bob was inspired by the legendary Conrad Schwering. It was at this time Bob dedicated his life to painting. Bob is now considered one of the foremost landscape artists in the nation.

"Green River Cliffs Wyoming" by Thomas Moran acquired by National Gallery of Art in D.C.

From the Billings Gazette:

The National Gallery of Art in Washington has acquired the celebrated landscape painting "Green River Cliffs, Wyoming" by 19th-century American artist Thomas Moran.

The painting goes on view Friday and will remain in a special installation through June. It is a gift of collector Vern Milligan and his two children.

"Green River" was featured in a 1997 retrospective of Moran's work at the gallery. Milligan purchased the painting at auction in 1994 for $2.7 million.

Gallery Director Earl A. Powell III says the museum was lacking a grand, panoramic view of the American West.

Moran completed the work 10 years after his first trip west in 1871. His work has been increasing in value in recent years. A 1878 Moran piece sold for $17.7 million in 2008.

Zak Pullen unveils painting of Masters Golf Tournament champs Feb. 25 at Corridor Gallery

The Corridor Gallery in downtown Casper announces the completion and debut showing of the "Masters Grip," a painting by Casper artist resident and gallery co-owner Zachary Pullen. On Friday, Feb. 25, Masters Grip will available for viewing to the public for the first time ever. As well as the final painting, the show will also include the work leading up to the final canvas, including all preliminary sketches and layout pencil drawings to completion. Zak is off to the annual Masters Tournament hospitality venue in Augusta, Georgia, this April to announce the unveiling of his latest creation. The painting contains 75 years of history depicting those that helped write it. The public and press are invited to join Zak at the Corridor Gallery for Masters Grip world debut right here in Casper, Wyoming.

Four years ago, professional illustrator and avid golfer Zachary Pullen conceived and began creating Masters Grip. Inspiration for this painting came through a story told of Tiger Woods and Byron Nelson comparing their grips during a champion’s dinner. In 2011, Zachary is happy to announce the completion of a painting culminating his passions into one 72” x 24” canvas. At the center of the painting, seated at a table in the foreground of Amen Corner, a vibrant and expressive Robert Trent Jones, Jr., leads Zak’s rendition of the beautiful Augusta National Golf Course. Around Robert, Zak meticulously integrated the caricature portraits of all 45 professional golfers to date sharing the honor of winning the famed “green jacket." Zak, a professional illustrator for 16 years, has found success with many illustrations and paintings published in such periodicals as Golf World, Sports Illustrated, New York Times Book Review, Esquire, Penthouse, National Geographic Society and many others. In addition to periodicals, Zak’s work has been the content of multiple picture books published by Simon and Schuster, Penguin Putnam and Sleeping Bear Press. Zak has also earned notoriety by his acceptance into The Society of Illustrators and the Communication Arts best in contemporary illustration annual. Masters Grip is a project born for the love of the game. “I’m thrilled to be releasing a new work of art based upon my passions for the culture, personality and history of golf” Zak states.

ARTIST STATEMENT 

This series of watercolor/gouache portraits was inspired by images from my family photo 

album. All of the children pictured would now be 50 to 70 years old. They are my family, myself, 

friends, and classmates, and I am looking back at them across time.

Children are very conscious of the adult gaze. In the photos, I see children looking back at adult 

authority. How they respond to the adult “in charge” will shape their entire lives, and says a lot 

about who they are or yearn to be. It will stay with them into adulthood. 

The process of painting portraits from the photographs forces me to look closely and intimately 

at the expressions and body language of these children. Re-interpreting the image through 

watercolor, a child’s art material, helps me bring out what I know is under the surface.

I was pleased to serve as one of the judges yesterday for the annual Boys & Girls Club National Fine Art Exhibition at the Laramie County Public Library in Cheyenne.

I've been a judge the past three years. Interest in this competition grows every year. This year, there was a big increase in 3-D entries in the pottery and sculpture category. Art Coordinator Michael Raper gets some of the credit for this. In December, he was a recipient of the Golden Apple Teacher's Award from Cheyenne's CBS Channel 5. Michael is assisted by Shanda Tryon.

Youth that attend programs at the Cheyenne Boys & Girls Club participate in four age categories. First-place and Best-In-Show recipients will go to the regional competition. You can find out more at www.bgcchey.org.

The library exhibit will be on display through Feb. 11. Look for the paintings and drawings on the second floor children's section and pottery and sculpture on the second floor and in the display cabinets in the library's entryway.

The Cheyenne Boys & Girls Club has received grants and other assistance from the Wyoming Arts Council.

On Dec. 29, outgoing Gov. Dave Freudenthal made this announcement about funding for Wyoming Boys & Girls Clubs:

CHEYENNE -- Gov. Dave Freudenthal has committed up to $1.3 million in federal funds for Boys and Girls Clubs around Wyoming for major maintenance and repairs on club facilities as well as the purchase of equipment.

"Boys and Girls Clubs have difficulty raising funding for their important infrastructure needs," Freudenthal said today in a media release. "It's important that we dedicate these remaining federal stimulus funds to help meet those needs."

The $1.3 million for Boys and Girls Clubs is the available balance from State Fiscal Stabilization Fund monies which had earlier been dedicated to the construction of juvenile detention facilities in the state.

"The clubs have significant infrastructure needs but they just can't raise the money to address them," Freudenthal said, "so we're dedicating federal funds to these community projects."

Jack Tarter, president of the Wyoming Alliance of Boys and Girls Club, said, "I'm very excited about the money as it not only will enlarge the scope of opportunity within the clubs but also allow for a greater number of teens to become involved in the clubs."

Boys and Girls Clubs are located in Buffalo, Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Douglas, Eastern Shoshone Tribe, F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Gillette, Glenrock, Kaycee, Powell, Rawlins and Rock Springs. The funding will allow clubs to apply to the State Land and Investment Board to use the funds for major maintenance of the facilities and expenditures such as computers, software and educational materials to support activities within the centers.

"Boys and Girls Clubs give children a safe and affordable place to go after school and our programs help lower dropout rates," Tarter said.

Club programs that assist children with school homework or prepare them for future development could benefit from the funding.

The State will determine which projects are eligible for the federal funds, which may involve site visits in addition to the standard application process. The money comes from the State Fiscal Stabilization funds under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
