After the Wyoming Arts Council met in Laramie with the Wyoming Humanities Council, we all walked over to Gallery 211 to view an exhibition in progress.

The “Sequencing through Time and Place” exhibits feature artwork by Wendy Bredehoft and Susan Moldenhauer and dance video by Margaret Wilson.

Can dance movement, still photography and studio art come together in a seamless consideration of place and creative process in a public forum?

Part 1: Ucross presents the work created in 2009 during a six-day residency at the Ucross Foundation in northeastern Wyoming. It will be on view Wednesday, June 22.

Part 2: London is work made in the urban landscape of London where the vast space of the glazed-in British Museum became the work space for Bredehoft, Moldenhauer and Wilson to pursue their work together. It will be on view Saturday, June 25. 

Part 3: Fort Laramie presents work created by the artists at the Fort Laramie Historic Site in eastern Wyoming where the concept of framing became a dominant focus of their work. It will be on view on Wednesday, June 29.

Gallery 211 is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day of the exhibition. Free and open to the public. A full-color exhibition catalog which includes a DVD of Wilson's dance variations will be on sale for $30.

Experimental exhibition explores concept of place and creative process

Sequencing through Time and Place, an experimental three-part exhibition by artist Wendy Bredehoft, photographer Susan Moldenhauer and dancer Margaret Wilson examines three locations through their respective mediums of mixed media, photography and movement. For more than three years, Bredehoft, Moldenhauer and Wilson have investigated landscape and place through their respective mediums while considering the intersections between intent, meaning and creative process. How does a dancer interpret or respond to the same landscape as a painter or photographer? How do artists transcend medium to respond simultaneously to each other's work? Can dance movement, still photography and studio art come together in a seamless consideration of place and creative process in a public forum?
Part 1: Ucross presents the work created in 2009 during a six-day residency at the Ucross Foundation in northeastern Wyoming. The formative stages of the artists’ work together was established during this residency. Themes such as shadow, line, space and scale were integral to the exploration of the creative process expressed in the divergent media of dance, photography and the graphic arts. It will be on view Wednesday, June 22.

Moldenhauer (photographer) is the director and chief curator of the University of Wyoming Art Museum. Bredehoft (mixed media, pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor and Strappo) is the curator of eduation at the University of Wyoming Art Museum. Wilson (choreography and dance) is an associate professor of dance at the University of Wyoming and initiated the vertical dance program.

Each exhibition is open to the public for one day as we explore how to present our work that explores three places: Ucross, London, and Fort Laramie. Cheyenne Hispanic Festival June 3-5

The Cheyenne Hispanic Festival, supported in part by a Cultural Trust Fund grant, will occur in the Cheyenne Depot Plaza June 3 -5, 2011. The festival will include mariachis, jalapeno contest, Aztec dancers, food and craft vendors, live entertainment and more. The Festival will include educational and cultural exhibits. Schedule announced for UW Snowy Range Theatre & Dance Festival

The 2011 Snowy Range Summer Theatre and Dance Festival, presented by the University of Wyoming Department of Theatre and Dance, will feature three full-length plays in June and July.

The festival, established in 2005 as an outgrowth of UW's longstanding summer theatre program and its annual dance festival, opens June 14-18, with Theresa Rebeck's backstage comedy "The Understudy" and continues June 28-July 2, with playwright-in-residence William Missouri Downs' new comedy/drama "Forgiving John Lennon" and July 12-16, with Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd's musical revue "A ... My Name is Alice."

The Dance Festival Student Showcase Concert (July 27), Dance Festival Gala Concert (July 30) and Vertical Dance at Vedauwoo (Aug. 20-21) conclude the festival.

All theatre performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the UW Fine Arts studio theatre. Both festival dance performances will be in the UW Arts and Sciences auditorium, with the Dance Festival Student Showcase Concert beginning at 7 p.m. and the Dance Festival Gala Concert beginning at 4 p.m. Vertical Dance will be at the Vedauwoo Recreation Area.

Tickets for theatre performances cost $10 for the public, $8 for senior citizens and $5 for students. Tickets for dance are $12 at the door or $10 pre-purchased. Tickets for vertical dance cost $6.50 per person or dog.

Klezmer music and Israeli folk dancing highlight Yiddish Food Festival May 22

The sixth annual Yiddish Food Festival is scheduled to take place in Cheyenne at Mt. Sinai Synagogue on Sunday, May 22, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The Festival is an open house type event with free admission and cultural food for sale. Mt. Sinai Synagogue is located at 2610 Pioneer Ave in Cheyenne Wyoming. The Festival is designed to introduce visitors to Mt Sinai Congregation's historic building, rituals, music and delicious ethnic foods. Synagogue President Marv Wolf says "You'll kvell over the food, music, and hospitality."

Get into the swing of country swing at Casper College

Two popular dance classes, Country Swing (Beginning) (CMSV 0040 80) and Country Swing (Intermediate) (CMSV 0041 80), will begin on Sunday, March 27, at Casper College.

Country Swing (Intermediate) will run from 4 to 6 p.m. each Sunday through April 17. According to Machelle Holloway, instructor, those taking the class will “expand on the dance steps learned in the country swing beginners class and learn the two-step, waltz, and some ballroom.”

County Swing (Beginning) will run from 6 to 8 p.m. The country swing class is a beginner’s level class and “students will learn three fun and easy dances; country swing, two-step, and country waltz,” Holloway said. The class runs from 6 to 8 p.m. each Sunday and will also run through April 17.

Deadline March 25 for Western Arts Alliance Juried Showcase Program at Seattle conference

Western Arts Alliance (WAA) is now accepting applications from performing artists, companies, or their agents for its 2011 Juried Showcase Program.  The showcase, part of the 2011 WAA Annual Conference in Seattle, will take place on August 31 at the Broadway Performance Hall.  The Juried Showcase gives presenters and delegates the opportunity to see a diverse range of performance of outstanding quality in a short program.  Juried Showcasing artists are selected in a competitive process by a committee of WAA members, and their performances take place as part of the core conference program.

The application fee is $65; you need not be a member of WAA at the time of application, but all showcasing artists must be members (or represented by a member) exhibiting at the conference.

All materials must be received in the WAA Office by Friday, March 25, 2011.

Western Arts Alliance is a membership association of touring and performing arts professionals engaged in promoting and presenting performing arts throughout the western states and provinces. The WAA Annual Conference will convene presenters, artists, and agents August 29-September 2, 2011, around the shared goal of programming live performances.  Opportunities for meetings, exhibits, performances, networking, speakers, classes and workshops will be featured throughout the conference week.  Artists, Managers and Agents will be able to share their or their artists' work with more than 200 presenting organizations based in the West, making the WAA Conference one of the best resources for connecting with presenters and colleagues.

Céilí (pronounced kay-lee) is an Irish word that means social gathering, with music. In other words, a party! In its third year in Evanston, Wyoming, the Céilí at the Roundhouse Celtic Festival March 11-12 promises to be the best one yet, with word class music, culture, shopping, food, and the Children’s Area.

“We are selling tickets to people from different states who are amazed that these internationally acclaimed bands are coming to little old Evanston,” said Young Musicians Executive Director Carolee Bowen, who is organizing the event. “They know that our small town atmosphere is the best place to get up close with artists who would never be approachable in NYC, Chicago or LA.”

Friday night features Väsen (veh-sen) from Sweden, with Americans Mike Marshall & Darol Anger, with a pre-show by Killarney. Saturday night features De Danann (day-dawn-in) from Ireland. Both headline concerts start at 8 pm in the Roundhouse. An all-out jam session will follow the concerts over in the Machine Shop until midnight. Festival daytime entertainment at the Machine Shop includes Evanston’s own Celtic Mist, and Marty Smith, and coming from Utah, Amber & Rye, Julie ni Hewkin, and the Rovin’ Boozers. Educational workshops include Multi Style Fiddle Improvisation, Mandolin, Beginning Bodhran (Irish Drum), Bouzouki Madness, and question/answer time with members of Väsen and De Danann. Daytime admission is just $3. Or, if you have a large family and you want to bring them all to everything including the 8 pm concerts, buy a Uinta County Concert Series season FAMILY pass for $125. That will get them all in, and also into all the concerts for the rest of the Uinta County Concert Series season through May!”

Medal of Arts winner: Dance has made "an important contribution to our world"

Ella Baff, executive and artistic director of Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, Mass., accepted a National Medal of Arts at the White House on behalf of her organization. Among the ten arts-world awardees, including Van Cliburn, Meryl Streep, Sonny Rollins, Quincy Jones and James Taylor among others, Jacob's Pillow was the sole organization to be honored. It's the only dance presenter to garner the medal since the awards were first handed out in 1984.

"Less is known about dance than the other art forms, and there are many reasons why. I hope this visibility will carry meaning beyond the day, and that people will become more aware about dance," she added. "It's a real profession, and it's made an important contribution to our world."

Alonzo King LINES Ballet returns to Jackson with Scheherazade - a timeless tale of "1,001 Nights" interpreted through Alonzo King's unique artistic lens. This work was originally commissioned by the Monaco Dance Forum to inaugurate the Centenary of the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo. A new score by tabla master Zakir Hussain re-interprets the original music by Rimsky-Korsakov.

Alonzo King is recognized as one of the fifty outstanding artists in American by the United States Artists organization. He is noted for his collaborations with other cutting-edge composers, musicians and visual artists.

Zimbabwe performer Thomas Mapfumo visits UW for African Awareness Week

Wyoming African Student Association (WASA) will be celebrating African Awareness Week starting February 14 to February 19. It is a week long of events starting with helping you appreciate the ones you love on Valentine's Day, drumming in the Skyline Lounge on Wednesday between 11 and 1 pm, a symposium on Thursday with the theme "The role of women in African politics" with four professors on the panel and three WASA students in Yellowstone Ballroom from 6 to 8pm. Refreshments will be provided. On Saturday February 19 there will a play, dance and music performance by the legend Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe in the Education Auditorium starting at 4 pm and this will be followed by dinner in Washakie from 7:15-8:30pm. A ticket is required for the dinner. Tickets will be given out at the Information desk in the union on Tuesday and Wednesday between 11 and 1pm (or until they run out). Cleo Parker Robinson Dance offers free public performance Feb. 22 in Casper

Utah's Repertory Dance Theatre performs Jan. 22 in Pinedale

The Repertory Dance Theatre of Utah will conduct a performance on Saturday, Jan. 22, 7 p.m., in the Pinedale Auditorium in Pinedale.
