Postmark deadline draws near for WAC visual arts fellowships

The postmark deadline for the Wyoming Arts Council’s 2011 Visual Arts Fellowships is Friday, May 13. The applications will be judged by mixed-media artist Nancy Bowen, photographer Mark Klett and sculptor Joshua Wiener.

The WAC will award up to three fellowships of $3,000 each to honor the work of visual artists that reflects serious and exceptional aesthetic investigation. Painters, sculptors, printmakers, potters, media artists, craftspeople, video, film and others are invited to apply by submitting digital images of their work.

This competition is open to Wyoming residents only.

The contest is open to all students and children anywhere in the Laramie County School Districts, grades Pre-K through 12, and home-schoolers. The Pedestrian Underpass connects the Jackson Hole Community Pathway’s System North Highway 89 Pathway to the National Museum of Wildlife Art. The Underpass acts as a gateway to the Walter Hood designed sculpture trail which is scheduled for construction this summer. This section of Pathway will connect the Town of Jackson to Grand Teton National Park and runs parallel to the National Elk Refuge. Opportunities exist for artists to enhance the four concrete retaining walls on framing the underpass after they have been built.

Call for entries: Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition

Postmark deadline is Feb. 28 for the Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition.

Judge for this year's competition, open to Wyoming artists only, is Anne Morand. She is the curator of art with the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

This call for entries comes from Gwynne Middleton, editor of Precipitate Journal:

Precipitate is kicking off its second year in service of the environmental literary arts, and we’re updating our journal cover. This is where you, the visual artist, can help. We’re on the hunt for a strong image that will appear on the portal page for Precipitate, volume two, and we’re hoping you’ve made that image and are itching to share it with the world.

In our current portal image, you’ll notice that the photo was taken in the great outdoors, but its aim was to push at the boundaries of traditional nature photography.

That said, your work need not depict “nature” or contain landscape. If it does include these traditional elements, you’ll want to be sure the image complicates its subject and/or the viewer’s relationship to place before you send it along.

Last but not least, we’re open to all forms of visual art. As long as it can translate well into a two-dimensional image, we’re interested.

Call for applications: Omi International Arts Center

Omi International Arts Center, a residency program and sculpture park in the Hudson River Valley town of Omi, NY, is currently accepting applications for its Art Omi International Artists Residency, which invites 30 artists from around the world for three weeks every July. The Center provides room and board, and fellowships are available to cover the cost of travel and materials. To apply, submit a completed application form, a résumé, documentation of work (either a CD with six JPEGS or a DVD with three one-minute video excerpts), and an accompanying artist statement and image list or video script. Call for entries: Alex Workshop Center in Egypt

The Alex workshop center in Alexandria, Egypt, is holding a program of artistic residencies for international artists starting in January 2011 to April 2012; this program is specialized for both sculpturing (stones) and Intaglio nontoxic printmaking for professional artists. The center will host one artist in each field in the period of 1 February 2011 to 15 February 2011. The center will provide accommodation and work studio for 12 work days, although the artist will have to afford the expenses of his/her transportation from his/her residency to Alexandria and the artistic materials.

The applications are to be presented from Monday 1 November to Tuesday 30 November 2010. Applications presented after that will not be regarded.

Conditions:

1- The applications are sent only by email to the center’s email info@alexworkshopcenter.org

2- The artist has to apply an updated resume

3- About 6 to 8 works that have been done in the last three years none of the images is more than 60kb in size.

4- Each artist will make an exhibition to show his/her works in the beginning of his/her coming to the center

5- Each artist will, at the end of eacgh residency, hold a workshop in his/her area of experience for 4 days for the young artists.

6- The center will hold an exhibition of the works that the artist has produced in the period of his/her residency and also the results of workshops in the observatory hall in the center.

Call for entries: Sagebrush Rendezvous Art Exhibit & Sale

The 33rd Annual Sagebrush Rendezvous Art Exhibit and Sale

January 29-30, 2011, Running Y Convention Center, Klamath Falls, Oregon

For the past 32 years the Sagebrush Rendezvous has presented a mid-winter art exhibit and sale, drawing over 1000 patrons each season to its two-day show. Originally set as a Western wildlife and landscape art exhibit, it now invites artists working every genre and every type of medium, from pencil to sculpture. Last year the program took on a new direction with an open call to artists to present their works in a juried format.

Here’s an opportunity to show work at a highly successful show that has raised over $350,000 for charity, including the American Cancer Society, Hospice, Special Olympics, and other charitable programs.

Juried-in artists’ pieces sold at Sagebrush pay out 65 percent to the artists, 35 percent to the charitable programs mentioned. It is also a perfect venue to get juried artists’ works and names better recognized in the West. Art prices at the 2010 show ranged from $5 for small photos by nature photographers to over $3,500 for original art.

The Exchange Club of Klamath Falls, the sponsor of the event, also hosts a two-hour “quick draw” for participating artists, with an auction at the end. Half of the revenues from this event also go to charities,
the other half to the artists.This is a major social event for Southern Oregon, held at the famed Running Y Convention Center just west of Klamath Falls on Highway 140.

In addition to the exhibit and sale, we have two days of beer and wine tasting, served up by over 100 volunteers. Accommodations are available at discounted room rates at the Running Y Resort, with upscale lodge rooms and condominiums with full cooking privileges. If you’re interested in wildlife, beautiful landscapes, bring your art materials with you when you come.

Portland Art Museum curator touring the West

Bonnie Laing-Malcomson, curator of Northwest Art at the Portland (Oregon) Art Museum, will be conducting a session on Sunday, October 17, 11 a.m.-6 p.m., at the Yellowstone Art Museum, 401 N 27th St., Billings, Mont.

Here's what she has to say about the subjects of her session:

“What I am doing around the west is two-fold. Firstly, I am holding what I am calling focus group meetings for artists and arts professionals (college arts administrators, gallery owners etc.) to present the Portland Art Museum’s curatorial focus on Northwest art and to outline the opportunities and limitations inherent to the position. Below is a ...brief position description describing my responsibilities, and listing the number and type of exhibitions for which the Curator of Northwest Art is responsible annually.

The Curator of Northwest art is responsible for the care, research, exhibition, growth and custody of all objects in the Northwest art collection belonging to or on loan to the Portland Art Museum. The position serves a five-state region including Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. Duties include developing temporary exhibitions, especially the biennial Contemporary Northwest Art Awards and three-to-four, usually single artist, changing exhibitions per year know as “APEX” exhibitions. The curator works on exhibition related programs, garnering support and writing and speaking about Northwest art. The curator supervises presentation of all traveling exhibitions of Northwest art scheduled by the Museum and serves as advisor to the Northwest Art Council.” “I am very interested … to begin building a library of discs of current and past work, so as I am planning exhibitions I will know who is doing strong work in the five-state region.”

WAC will hold visual arts reception and artists' roundtable April 24 in Casper

On Saturday, April 24, 5:30-8 p.m., the Wyoming Arts Council will hold its visual arts fellowship awards reception followed by an artists’ roundtable at Hilton Garden Inn, 1150 N. Poplar St., Casper.

This event is free and open to the public. An assortment of hors d’oeuvres will be served along with tea and coffee.

The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. and the 2010 WAC visual arts fellowships will be announced at 6 p.m. That will be followed by a roundtable featuring presentations by the judges for this year’s fellowships – sculptor Kate Budd from Akron Ohio; mixed-media artist Susan Johnson from St. Mary’s, Md.; and photographer Mark Klett from Tempe, Ariz.

Call for proposals: Gallery 211 in Laramie

Gallery 211, located in downtown Laramie at 211 S. 1st Street, is accepting exhibition proposals for summer 2010. Exhibitions will take place from July 15 – August 15. Gallery 211 is an exhibition space used for display of artwork by local, national, and international artists at all stages in their careers. Gallery 211’s primary mission is to provide a non-commercial venue dedicated to contemporary art and culture.

Eligibility:
Any artist based in Wyoming over the age of 18 can submit a proposal for review. Students, educators, professional, and non-professional artists are all eligible to apply. Artists can apply for solo, collaborative, or group exhibitions. There are no limitations on the type of work that can be proposed, although artists must be able to cover the cost of materials, fabrication, transportation, and peripheral devices. Gallery 211 will not be able to provide monitors, projectors, or sound equipment. Artists interested in incorporating technology must supply their own devices.

Requirements:
Please submit the following items. Only digital submissions will be accepted.
CV Artist statement(s) Exhibition proposal 10 images of work that is representative of what you wish to exhibit. Images should be labeled as such: lastname.firstname_1.jpg (for example: gardner.james_1.jpg). Images should be 72 dpi and 6 inches in the longest direction. A numbered image list that corresponds to the digital files.

Here are this year's jurors:

KATE BUDD was born in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1969. She received her bachelor’s degree from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1990, and her MFA in Sculpture from Southern Illinois University in 1995. She has received two Individual Excellence Awards from the Ohio Arts Council and her work has been exhibited in numerous group exhibits in the U.S. and U.K. Solo exhibits include “tableau” at William Busta Gallery in Cleveland; “Thorny” at Rudolph Poissant Gallery, Houston; “Kate Budd: On Site Ohio” at the Akron Art Museum and “Honey” at The College of Wooster in Ohio. Her work has been reviewed in Art in America, New Art Examiner and Sculpture magazines and she is currently represented by William Busta Gallery, Cleveland. Before coming to teach at the University of Akron, Kate taught in the sculpture department at the University of Texas for three years. SUE JOHNSON earned a BFA in painting from Syracuse University and an MFA in painting from Columbia University. Selected residency fellowships include the Arts/Industry Program, John Michael Kohler Art Center, Millay Colony, Art Omi International Artist Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, City of Salzburg/Salzburg Kunstlerhaus Residency Fellowship, American Philosophical Society/Andre Michaux Library Research Fellowship, and American Antiquarian Society research fellowship. Johnson is a professor of art in the Department of Art and Art History at St. Mary's College of Maryland where she has taught painting, drawing, printmaking and book arts since 1993. MARK KLETT photographs the intersection of cultures, landscapes and time. His background includes working as a geologist before turning to photography. Klett has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Buhl Foundation, and the Japan/US Friendship Commission. His work has been exhibited and published both nationally and internationally for over 30 years, including a 2000 show at the University of Wyoming Art Museum entitled “Witness to an Occupied Land.” His work is held in over 80 museum collections worldwide. He is the author of thirteen books including Saguaros (Radius Press and DAP, 2007), After the Ruins (University of California Press 2006), Yosemite in Time (Trinity University Press, 2005), and Third Views, Second Sights (Museum of New Mexico Press 2004). * Understand how to apply texture to soft slabs using found objects, cut out inlaid shapes, clay stamps and bisque molds of textured surfaces which the clay is rolled on, producing a full
slab of texture.
* Learn how to make various pottery forms starting from a basic cylinder of clay, which is altered by cutting darts or pinching, and pushing out the clay to round out the form. Alternate ways of treating the bottom of a pot with regard to added feet or foot rings will be included, as well as various types of handles made from slabs and coils.

Everybody is invited to join us at the First Annual Platte River Photograph Show at the Pioneer Museum on Wednesday, January 20, 2010. 5-7 p.m. We will be having an open reception on Wednesday and the show will be exhibited at the museum through Friday, January 22. If you would like to enter a photograph, it must be matted , framed and submitted to the Pioneer Museum by Monday January 18. You then need to pick up your pictures on Monday, January 25. An application is available at the Douglas Chamber at the Depot of the Railroad Interpretative Center.

This is an open show, of any subject and you may submit up to 4 pictures.

I hope if you are unable to submit a photograph that you can visit with us on Wednesday, January 20th or see the exhibit till Friday, Jan 22nd at the Wyoming Pioneer Museum. We have some very talented people in the area and I hope to see you there!

Call for entries: Owen Wister Review

Submissions from writers and artists are being accepted for the University of Wyoming's nationally acclaimed literary and arts journal, the Owen Wister Review.

Journal editors will select original works of fiction, poetry, photography and art for inclusion in the 2010 edition. Submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.

"We are expecting another great year and can't wait to start looking through this year's submissions," says Joshua Watanabe, OWR editor.
In October, OWR won its second Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award.
