Voices of Freedom/Faces of Freedom features community portraits at July 4's Music in the Hole

Tedx Jackson Hole has joined the global art project initiated by TEDPrize winner, the French street artist and photographer JR, and you are invited to be part of the fun! In partnership with the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Wyoming Humanities Council we have launched Voices of Freedom/Faces of Freedom.

There are three elements:

1. During GTMF’s Music in the Hole Celebration on the Fourth of July, personal statements about the meaning of Freedom will be incorporated into one of the pieces of music

2. A large photo installation featuring poster-size portraits of the will be exhibited (location TBD) outside as a public art installation during July

3. Photos and personal statements will be uploaded as part of TED Prize-winner JR’s Global “Inside Out” art project. Check out www.insideoutproject.net to browse what has already been uploaded and see for yourself what we have in mind!

You can participate in any and all of this. We would like at least 100 and would welcome 1,000! Here is what you would need to do:

Answer the question “What does Freedom mean to you?” Define it any way you wish—it is a big notion—and send it to us. We will arrange to take your portrait and will take care of the rest. We will have a photo booth at Music in the Hole in partnership with the Wyoming Humanities Council’s “Rumination Wheel,” as well.

Big West Arts Festival celebrates sixth year

The Big West Arts Festival celebrates its sixth year as a large cultural event on the front lawn of the Sheridan College campus in Sheridan, Wyoming.  Its site is nestled in the valley with the dramatic Big Horn Mountains to the west and the spacious, wide-open plains to the east.  Sheridan lies midway between the Black Hills of South Dakota and Yellowstone National Park.

Gov. Matt Mead presents purchase awards to six artists at Governor's Capitol Art Exhibition

Six Wyoming artists received purchase awards totaling nearly $8,500 during the Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition reception recently held at the Wyoming State Museum.

Following remarks by First Lady Carol Mead (at far left in photo), Governor Matthew H. Mead (at far right in photo) presented  purchase awards to Jerry Antolik of Hudson for his painting, “Mallard;” Sonja R. Caywood of Dayton for her painting, “Evening Cattle on West Pass;” Travis Ivey of Laramie for his painting, “Two Track Morning;” James Kevin Robinett of Cheyenne for his painting, “Brisbee Hill #2;” Georgia Rowswell of Cheyenne for her mixed media work, “She Discovered the West in a Dress;” and Randy Nottingham of Casper for his painting, “Rounding the Hill.”

Secretary of State Max Maxfield awarded the Bobby Hathaway Juror’s Choice Award to Story photographer, Claire L. Leon for her image, “Stained Glass Brook.” The Juror’s Choice Award was selected by exhibition juror, Anne Morand, curator of art, National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

This year’s People’s Choice Award was presented to Lindsay Olson of Laramie for her lush photograph “Zamaora – Zamora, Ecuador.”

The pieces receiving purchase awards will be included in the Capitol Art Collection, and are now eligible for display in the offices of the state’s five elected officials. The governor, first lady, secretary of state, state auditor, state treasurer, state superintendent of public instruction, Wyoming Business Council and representatives from the Division of Tourism selected the purchase award recipients.

NIC Fest features performances by Urban Island

NIC Fest at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper starts at 5 this evening. The annual event features booths and demos by more than 60 visual artists and three days of musical entertainment.

The corner of Beech and 2nd street on the NIC Fest grounds will feature a whole new “unique, completely original” sound this year when the Urban Island, a steel drum band from Denver, performs on Saturday and Sunday, June 25-26.

Rick Henson, founder of Rocky Mountain Steel Bands, formed this ensemble when he recognized that steel pan drums are universally regarded as intriguing, fascinating, and beautiful instruments – yet they are confined to traditional "tropical" tunes. Urban Island utilizes the versatility of these melodious drums in performing favorite pop classics, light modern rock, and dance-able Caribbean folk tunes.

Performances are set for 12:30, 2 and 4 p.m. Saturday; and 10:50 a.m., 12:10 and 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The 2011 Governor's Capitol Art exhibition and Sale celebrates Wyoming artists. This juried competition is building a unique art collection for display in the executive offices and public areas of government facilities in the Cheyenne area. The annual exhibition is a joint partnership between the five elected officials, the Governor’s Residence, Wyoming Travel & Tourism, Wyoming Business Council and the Wyoming Department of State Parks and Cultural Resources, which includes the Wyoming Arts Council, the Wyoming State Museum and the Wyoming State Archives. Monies realized from the sale of works in the Governor’s Capitol Art Exhibition are utilized to acquire new works for the permanent art collection of the Wyoming State Museum. Artwork is available for purchase through June 25. Please support this effort by personally selecting one, or more, of these unique works created by a Wyoming artist. Update on Western Wyoming Plein Air Competition

News from Charles Dayton about the Western Wyoming Plein Air Competition July 20-23 in Cokeville:

Artists may paint anywhere in Western Wyoming with at least one painting within 20 miles of Cokeville. Artists may turn in up to four completed, framed and ready-to-be-hung works for the competition and show. All work must be done en plein air without the assistance of photography and must be started and completed on July 20th - July 22nd. The ‘Paint Out’ will be followed by a Reception and an Award Ceremony for the artists and their guests on Friday, July 22nd. The Western Wyoming Plein Competition will culminate in a show and sale held in conjunction with the Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show.

Entry Fees: $10 for each surface pre-registered on or before July 15th, 2011, $15 entry fee for each surface registered at the competition.

Pre-registration by mail: All pre-paid, pre-registration forms are due before July 15th, 2011.

Experimental exhibition explores concept of place and creative process

Sequencing through Time and Place, an experimental three-part exhibition by artist Wendy Bredehoft, photographer Susan Moldenhauer and dancer Margaret Wilson examines three locations through their respective mediums of mixed media, photography and movement. Each part will be on view for one day at Gallery 211, 211 1st St., Laramie.

For more than three years, Bredehoft, Moldenhauer and Wilson have investigated landscape and place through their respective mediums while considering the intersections between intent, meaning and creative process. How does a dancer interpret or respond to the same landscape as a painter or photographer? How do artists transcend medium to respond simultaneously to each other's work? Can dance movement, still photography and studio art come together in a seamless consideration of place and creative process in a public forum?
Part 1: Ucross presents the work created in 2009 during a six-day residency at the Ucross Foundation in northeastern Wyoming. The formative stages of the artists’ work together was established during this residency. Themes such as shadow, line, space and scale were integral to the exploration of the creative process expressed in the divergent media of dance, photography and the graphic arts. It will be on view Wednesday, June 22.

Part 2: London is work made in the urban landscape of London where the vast space of the glazed-in British Museum became the work space for Bredehoft, Moldenhauer and Wilson to pursue their work together. It will be on view Saturday, June 25.

Part 3: Fort Laramie presents work created by the artists at the Fort Laramie Historic Site in eastern Wyoming where the concept of framing became a dominant focus of their work. It will be on view on Wednesday, June 29.

Gallery 211 is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day of the exhibition.

Moldenhauer (photographer) is the director and chief curator of the University of Wyoming Art Museum. Bredehoft (mixed media, pencil, charcoal, pastel, watercolor and Strappo) is the curator of eduation at the University of Wyoming Art Museum. Wilson (choreography and dance) is an associate professor of dance at the University of Wyoming and initiated the vertical dance program.

WOW's "Rated M for Mature Artists" show opens June 30

Beginning June 30, Works of Wyoming in Laramie will feature work by Crystal Lawrence, Shirlee Dahlberg, Dennis Fonfara, Jon & Ginnie Madsen, Joy Keown, Win Ratz, Dianna & Anthony James, Cat Martin, Jerry Glass, Mary Jo Atherton, Cathi Carr-Lunfeldt, David Larsen, and Jeanie Schlump. The show's title is "Rated M for Mature Artists."

The gallery opening and Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours will be Friday, June 30 from 5:30-7:30 pm with entertainment, snacks, and a raffle. The show will remain up until July 29.  

Justin Richards' unique furniture featured at Art Design & Dine June 9

Cheyenne artist Justin Richards will display his unique furniture at Glen Garrett's architectural studio and offices in downtown Cheyenne. The exhibit debuts during Art Design & Dine from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 9, in various locales around central Cheyenne.

Justin Richards is a furniture designer who recently completed an 8 week residency at Anderson Ranch in Colorado.

Justin had this to say about his work: "As a student of architecture and a practitioner of furniture design, I blur any distinction that exists between the two trades. My recent work invokes a hybrid notion of “designed intervention” -- I approach architecture from a level of detail found in furniture design, and I design furniture with consideration for its architectural impact. I am as immersed in fabrication as I am in design, and I constantly move between the two as I identify problems and pursue solutions."

Red Desert Rendezvous and Art Show June 17-19

We welcome your participation at the Red Desert Rendezvous and Art Show scheduled in and around Rock Springs for June 17-19.

The Rendezvous will offer people an opportunity to come and experience the Red Desert first hand with tours and an evening educational session on June 18. The goal of our collective effort for Red Desert Week and the Red Desert Rendezvous is to focus attention on this spectacular and mostly unknown piece of Wyoming's landscape and to do what we can to protect this important part of our heritage. Many in our coalition of Red Desert supporters would love to see the best parts of these lands designated a National Conservation Area while others would be content to see responsible federal and state agencies work to protect its unique features.

For a guided tour, you must sign up in advance.  There are four tour options. The tours are limited to 20 each per BLM requirements.  Registration will be on a first come, first serve basis.  Travel costs for gas will be shared.  You will be contacted to confirm your reservation and for specific directions. 

For the dinner, we also need advance registration and payment by June 13th. The Red Desert Rendezvous dinner is on Saturday, June 18, 5:30 pm at the Young at Heart Senior Center, 2400 Reagan Avenue, Rock Springs.  The dinner is $16 per person payable to the Wyoming Association of Churches on line at the link below or by check sent to:

On May 23, NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman and Blue Star Families Chairman Kathy Roth-Douquet announced the second annual launch of Blue Star Museums, a partnership with more than 1,300 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2011. The Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper invites you to the opening reception to "Shooting Gallery," an exhibition by Jamie Burmeister, on Friday, May 20. The museum members' preview begins at 5 p.m. and includes a lecture by the artist. The free public opening begins at 6 p.m.

Through experiments with sculpture, installation, mechanics, electronics, everyday materials, the Internet, interactivity, and sound and video, Jamie Burmeister has put together a diverse body of work that revolves around his conscious experience of the world. Many of his artworks have elements of humor, absurdity and the mundane. Many of the pieces are also interactive, creating situations where the viewer becomes a part of the piece. The experience of the work is unique depending upon how the viewers choose to interact with it.

The exhibit will be on display May 20-Aug. 7.

Arts Alliance of Cheyenne announces winners of 2011 Emerging Young Artist Contest

Congratulations to the Winners of the 2011 Emerging Young Artist Art Contest!

All winning entries will be on display at the Laramie County Library in Cheyenne from May 11-31, 2011.

One hundred and thirty guests attended the joint Arts Alliance and ASK After-School-for Kid’s art contest reception for the winners of the 2011 Young Artists Art contest at the Laramie County Library.   It was standing room only.  Guests were treated to the toe-tapping music of East High’s Strolling Strings and the wonderful gourmet offerings prepared by Dr. Michelle Aldrich and her class of culinary arts students.   This truly was a celebration of the arts!   Thirty-five winners (1st, 2nd, 3rd place and Honorable Mention) received an award check or gift certificate.

This year’s contest was about using Art to illustrate  a science concept.  Entries ranged from a 3-D illustration of the anatomy of an offshore squid to a depiction of a city of the future.  To emulate Leonardo Da Vinci, the Alliance asked students to put their thoughts and explorations about science down on paper for others to see.

The Teton County Public Library in Jackson will feature an exhibition of work by Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo June 6-30. The library gallery will feature large, life-size reproductions from Mexico’s most famous muralist: Diego Rivera. Right next to him you can enjoy prints of Frida Kahlo’s vibrant paintings and self-portraits that celebrate the colorful culture of Mexico. This display is part of a traveling exhibition from Teacher's Discovery and will be on display until June 30. Location: Library Exhibit Gallery. Free. Laramie High School arts show opens tonight at WOW

The Laramie High School art show opens Friday, May 13 (tonight!) from 6-8 p.m. at Works of Wyoming, 710 Garfield Street, Laramie. The event is from 6-8 p.m. and will be exhibited in the WOW Gallery through May 27. There are about 80 pieces of student work with a variety of media and subject matter.
