The Women's Film Institute is hitting the road again, and we are inviting you and your peers to submit your film to the the 3rd Annual Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour!

Over the last two years since its launch, the Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour has screened at various galleries, arthouse theaters, universities, and media arts centers all across the country and throughout the world. The diverse selection of shorts at the tour celebrates the exceptional contributions of women in the world of cinema from around the globe. The tour includes a cross-section of socially-conscious films that are a catalyst for connecting communities and fostering discussion through the power of independent filmmaking. The films serve as a quilt of stories meant to invoke and inspire audience-goers long after they leave the screening.

This is a call for entries for this year's tour. The 3rd Annual Women's Film Institute Shorts Tour accepts short films/videos 20 minutes or under in length, and of all genres: narrative, documentary, music video, animation, and experimental works. Films/videos must be directed or co-directed by women.

Call for applications: Vermont Studio Center

This announcement comes from the Vermont Studio Center in John son, Vermont:

The Vermont Studio Center is an international residency program open to all artists and writers.

Year-round, VSC hosts 50 artists and writers per month, each of whom receives an individual studio, private room, and all meals. Residencies last from 2-12 weeks and provide uninterrupted time to work, a community of creative peers, and a beautiful village setting in northern Vermont.

In addition, VSC's program includes a roster of Visiting Artists and Writers (2 painters, 2 sculptors and 2 writers per month) who offer slide talks/readings and individual studio visits/conferences.

Awards Available for the June 15 Deadline:

Vermont Studio Center Fellowships
Sixteen fellowships for a 4-week residency are open to all artists and writers based on merit, as represented in the portfolio or manuscript.

Anderson/Frankel Fellowship for Chicago area/SAIC alumni
One fellowship sponsored by the Marshall Frankel Foundation and Davis Anderson, this award is open to all Chicago-area artists, including faculty and alumni of the Art Institute of Chicago, for one 4-week VSC residency.

Civil Society Institute Fellowship
One award for a 4-week residency open to an east coast minority artist with demonstrable financial need; preference will be given to artists from New Haven, Jersey City, and Baltimore. The $25 application fee is waived for eligible CSI applicants. Award includes a $500 travel stipend.

Cave Canem Fellowship
This annual fellowship provides one 4-week residency to a poet who is a Cave Canem fellow.  Home for the many voices of African American poetry, Cave Canem is committed to cultivating the artistic and professional growth of African American poets. The $25 application fee is waived for applicants.

Pollock Krasner
The Pollock-Krasner Foundation/VSC Fellowship Program for visual artists of outstanding talent will support two 4-week residencies for domestic artists.

Henry David Thoreau Fellowship
This fellowship supports a poet whose work is a living extension of the literary tradition embodied in the work of Henry David Thoreau, for a 4-week residency.

Zoland Translation Fellowship
Offered in conjunction with Zoland Poetry, this 4-week residency fellowship is open to translators. Applicants should submit 3 copies of the original poems/translations, along with a description of English-language rights, author bio, and translator CV.

Postmark deadline draws near for WAC visual arts fellowships

The postmark deadline for the Wyoming Arts Council’s 2011 Visual Arts Fellowships is Friday, May 13. The applications will be judged by mixed-media artist Nancy Bowen, photographer Mark Klett and sculptor Joshua Wiener.

The WAC will award up to three fellowships of $3,000 each to honor the work of visual artists that reflects serious and exceptional aesthetic investigation. Painters, sculptors, printmakers, potters, media artists, craftspeople, video, film and others are invited to apply by submitting digital images of their work.

This competition is open to Wyoming residents only.

Wyoming Writers, Inc., announces contest guidelines:

Hard copy entries much be postmarked by April 9, 2011.

Entry fee:  $10.00 for each entry from members of Wyoming Writers, Inc., $15.00 for non-members,

Member fee for poetry is $10.00 for 3 poems, non-members $15.00 for 3 poems. We encourage non-members to join the organization. Information and membership form are available on www.wyowriters.org. Contest entry forms are also available on the web site, and from flyers in libraries and bookstores, and in the WyoWriters newsletter.  You may photocopy an entry form.

No limit on the number of entries, but there is an entry fee for each manuscript and every 3 poems. Include one check for the total amount. No entry fees will be refunded. 

Eligibility: The contest is open to all writers. All works must be the unpublished and the original work of the   submitter. All works must be in English. Work accepted or under consideration for publication elsewhere, or entered in another contest simultaneously is not eligible. Work that has previously placed or received an honorable mention in a Wyoming Writers, Inc. contest is not eligible. Work may be submitted to other contests or for publication after the contest deadline.

Copper Nickel, the journal of art and literature my colleagues and students and I edit here in Denver, will open its second contest this coming week, and I'm hoping you'll help spread the word in your writing communities.

Call for entries: ARTCORE New Music Competition

To find Wyoming artists and expose new work, ARTCORE hosts competitions in playwriting, visual arts and music on a rotating three-year cycle. This year, Wyoming composers have the chance to submit their manuscripts to the New Music Competition for the chance to win $300 and have accomplished Wyoming musicians perform their work.

To enter, follow these rules: Compositions can be for any combination of voice and/or instrument but must be limited to no more than eight performers. The work must not have been performed before, and compositions should be submitted on music manuscript paper in black ink. Performance time is limited to 20 minutes.

Submit three copies of your manuscript -- postmarked by March 15 -- to ARTCORE, P.O. Box 874, Casper, WY 82602. The entry fee is $15 per entry, with checks payable to ARTCORE, and a single composer may submit multiple entries. Manuscripts will not be returned unless you submit a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

A winner will be announced May 30, and performance of the winning work will be arranged for the 2011-2012 season.

The contest is open to Wyoming residents.

Call for entries: Openfilm's "Get It Made" competition

Openfilm is looking for short film submissions for the 2nd Get It Made competition. Submit your short film – with a running time of 40 minutes or less – for the chance to win the opportunity to produce it into a compelling feature film with Openfilm Studios. Openfilm will accept submissions throughout the year for the biannual competition (Deadline: December 31, 2010). There is a non-refundable $45 submission fee. Openfilm reserves the right to use still images and show short clips of any submitted films to promote the competition. Grand prize package is $50,000 cash and a $450,000 financing contract. To equalize the process, submitted entries are viewable from the time that they are entered into the competition, but all films will be voted on during the same time period. The top 10 films, as chosen by the Openfilm community’s votes and the Advisory Board, will move to the next round.

With the recent announcement that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (or NASA - best known as the agency that put the first man on the moon), is about to end its moon program for the foreseeable future it seems timely to curate an exhibition about the issues relating to space exploration. We are seeking proposals for work relating to the topic of ‘space’, and this may include: Perceptions of future life based in space, Space agencies, i.e. NASA, Russian space agency, the race for space, NASA by products, Objects in space - moon, sun, stars, planets, asteroid, meteor, galaxy, Ways of viewing space from earth- telescopes, satellites, The life of an astronaut, The possibility of other life forms in space, aliens, Popular culture and science fiction – Television (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica), film (Star wars) and literature, Design for space – the spaceship, lifestyles within space craft.

Exhibition will be on display September- December 2011.

FAME
Fame is defined as an impression, report or opinion about someone or something which is widely known. It may be of a positive of negative nature, and impact on the standing of that individual within a society. The United States has been described as a fame hungry culture, which has been fuelled in recent years by the plethora of communication devices, social networking internet sites which facilitate the dispersal of information in real time, and a slew of reality programming on both television and the internet. This exhibition will focus on the work of artists who address ideas about fame and infamy, celebrity culture, current idols, imitation of celebrities, any and all attempts to secure at least 15 minutes in the spotlight.

Exhibition will be on display January – March 2012.

These exhibitions will be accompanied by substantial exhibition catalogues.

Deadline draws nigh for WAC Blanchan & Doubleday writing awards

The postmark deadline for the 2011 Blanchan & Doubleday writing awards is Oct. 29, 2010.

The competition is open to Wyoming residents only, 18 or older.

The Neltje Blanchan Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script which is informed by a relationship with the natural world.

The Frank Nelson Doubleday Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script written by a woman author.

Ohio fiction writer and poet Jeanne Bryner has agreed to serve as the juror for this year’s competition.

Call for entries: Alex Workshop Center in Egypt

The Alex workshop center in Alexandria, Egypt, is holding a program of artistic residencies for international artists starting in January 2011 to April 2012; this program is specialized for both sculpturing (stones) and Intaglio nontoxic printmaking for professional artists. The center will host one artist in each field in the period of 1 February 2011 to 15 February 2011. The center will provide accommodation and work studio for 12 work days, although the artist will have to afford the expenses of his/her transportation from his/her residency to Alexandria and the artistic materials.

The applications are to be presented from Monday 1 November to Tuesday 30 November 2010. Applications presented after that will not be regarded.

Conditions:

1- The applications are sent only by email to the center’s email info@alexworkshopcenter.org

2- The artist has to apply an updated resume

3- About 6 to 8 works that have been done in the last three years none of the images is more than 60kb in size.

4- Each artist will make an exhibition to show his/her works in the beginning of his/her coming to the center

5- Each artist will, at the end of eacgh residency, hold a workshop in his/her area of experience for 4 days for the young artists.

6- The center will hold an exhibition of the works that the artist has produced in the period of his/her residency and also the results of workshops in the observatory hall in the center.

Call for entries: Sagebrush Rendezvous Art Exhibit & Sale

The 33rd Annual Sagebrush Rendezvous Art Exhibit and Sale

January 29-30, 2011, Running Y Convention Center, Klamath Falls, Oregon

For the past 32 years the Sagebrush Rendezvous has presented a mid-winter art exhibit and sale, drawing over 1000 patrons each season to its two-day show. Originally set as a Western wildlife and landscape art exhibit, it now invites artists working every genre and every type of medium, from pencil to sculpture. Last year the program took on a new direction with an open call to artists to present their works in a juried format.

Here’s an opportunity to show work at a highly successful show that has raised over $350,000 for charity, including the American Cancer Society, Hospice, Special Olympics, and other charitable programs.

Juried-in artists’ pieces sold at Sagebrush pay out 65 percent to the artists, 35 percent to the charitable programs mentioned. It is also a perfect venue to get juried artists’ works and names better recognized in the West. Art prices at the 2010 show ranged from $5 for small photos by nature photographers to over $3,500 for original art.

The Exchange Club of Klamath Falls, the sponsor of the event, also hosts a two-hour “quick draw” for participating artists, with an auction at the end. Half of the revenues from this event also go to charities,
the other half to the artists.This is a major social event for Southern Oregon, held at the famed Running Y Convention Center just west of Klamath Falls on Highway 140.

In addition to the exhibit and sale, we have two days of beer and wine tasting, served up by over 100 volunteers. Accommodations are available at discounted room rates at the Running Y Resort, with upscale lodge rooms and condominiums with full cooking privileges. If you’re interested in wildlife, beautiful landscapes, bring your art materials with you when you come.

Nomination deadline rapidly approaching for 2010 Governor's Arts Awards

The postmark deadline is Friday, Oct. 8, for nominations for the 2010 Governor’s Arts Awards.

The awards are presented based on accomplishments that reflect substantial contributions made to the arts in Wyoming, and exemplify a long-term commitment to the arts.

Previous Governor’s Arts Award recipients are not eligible; however, nomination of previously unselected nominees is encouraged.

Established in 1982, the Governor’s Arts Awards recognize excellence in the arts or outstanding service to the arts in Wyoming.

Over the years, 111 individuals and organizations from throughout the state have been honored for their dedication to the arts. This year is the 29th anniversary of these prestigious awards. This year’s recipients will be honored at a dinner and awards ceremony in Cheyenne, February 11, 2011.

Through the Governor’s Arts Awards and its many other program, the Wyoming Arts Council fulfills its mission to enhance the quality of life for the people of Wyoming by providing resources to sustain, promote and cultivate the arts.
