Trio Fine Art in Jackson offers full slate of summer exhibits

Wyomingarts made the acquaintance today (via phone) with Kathryn Mapes Turner, one of the artist-owners of Trio Fine Art gallery in Jackson.

Wyomingarts has yet to visit this gallery, but will make up for the oversight in two weeks while shepherding the WAC's fellowship exhibit curator around the state.

Kathryn says that there are four landscape painters involved with the gallery (it began with three, thus the name): Kathryn, September Vhay, Lee Carlman Riddell and Jennifer L. Hoffman.

Kathryn's Wyoming roots go deep. According to her web site bio, she's the fourth generation of her family raised on the Triangle X Ranch in Grand Teton National Park. She's been awarded with such honors as Wyoming Best Watercolor Artist and was included in SouthwestArt Magazine’s “Annual Profile of Young Artists with Promising Careers.”

Trio Fine Art, 545 N. Cache Street, is located four blocks north of the Jackson town square across from the north end of the visitors’ center. It’s open Wednesday-Saturday, noon-6 p.m. Kathryn says there’s always an artist minding the store. The Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper invites you to the opening reception to "Shooting Gallery," an exhibition by Jamie Burmeister, on Friday, May 20. The museum members' preview begins at 5 p.m. and includes a lecture by the artist. The free public opening begins at 6 p.m.

Through experiments with sculpture, installation, mechanics, electronics, everyday materials, the Internet, interactivity, and sound and video, Jamie Burmeister has put together a diverse body of work that revolves around his conscious experience of the world. Many of his artworks have elements of humor, absurdity and the mundane. Many of the pieces are also interactive, creating situations where the viewer becomes a part of the piece. The experience of the work is unique depending upon how the viewers choose to interact with it.

The exhibit will be on display May 20-Aug. 7.

Laramie High School arts show opens tonight at WOW

The Laramie High School art show opens Friday, May 13 (tonight!) from 6-8 p.m. at Works of Wyoming, 710 Garfield Street, Laramie. The event is from 6-8 p.m. and will be exhibited in the WOW Gallery through May 27. There are about 80 pieces of student work with a variety of media and subject matter.

"Architecture Speaks in Black & White" at Corridor Gallery May 20-22

The Corridor Gallery in downtown Casper proudly presents “Architecture Speaks In Black & White”, a photographic exhibit by Casper resident and artist, Michael Flicek. Michael has been shown in numerous galleries nationwide and is an award-winning photographer with a vast resume´. “Architecture Speaks In Black & White” will be Michael Flicek’s second solo show to Casper.

Michael is partial to black and white photography working in the digital realm. Capturing the image on locations is only the beginning of his process. Once Michael composes a photograph, he’s on to the next step of immersion within his “digital darkroom.” Michael then manipulates the image to fit his vision of a final work of art. Once satisfied, he creates immaculate digital prints in limited edition on archival quality glossy baryta finished paper. Due to the high quality print and stock used, Michael’s photographs take on a traditional look.

“Architecture Speaks In Black & White” will only be featured for 3 days at the Corridor gallery. The press and public are invited to attend the free opening reception on Friday, May 20th at 7 p.m. The public and press are invited to attend an artist’s talk with Michael on Saturday, May 21 at 2 p.m. Michael’s work will show only through Sunday, May 22. Reception tonight at UW's Gallery 234 for "Installation Experimentation"

UW Art Professor Ashley Hope Carlisle and her ART 3320 Mixed Media: Installation class will host an exhibition titled "Installation Experimentation" Monday through Friday, April 25-29, in Gallery 234, Room 004 of the University of Wyoming Union in Laramie.

A public reception for the artists is scheduled for Monday, April 25, from 6-8 p.m.

Throughout the semester, 13 students within this installation course have created three works each, exploring the many facets of working with installation as an art form. The exhibition includes documentation and aspects of each installation created during the semester.

Reception tonight for NWC's Juried Student Art & Design Exhibit

A reception will be held on Tuesday, April 19 (today!), 7:30-9 p.m., for the annual Juried Student Art & Design Exhibit at the Northwest Gallery in Northwest College’s Cabre Building. Free and open to the public. Refreshments served.

From "Yellowstone to Yukon: Freedom to Roam" exhibit at the BBHC

Despite the continuing snow, Wyomingites in know that summer is drawing near when the roads open in Yellowstone National Park and the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody expands its hours. Here's info about the latter::

On Sunday, May 1, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center shifts into its summer season schedule -- open daily 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. The summer schedule remains in effect through September 15.

The busy season brings four special exhibitions to the Center. On tap for this year are:
• Yellowstone to Yukon: Freedom to Roam, a photography exhibition, April 15-Aug.7.
• Arapaho Journeys: Photographs and Stories from the Wind River Reservation, April 29-October 2.
• Beauty Behind Barbed Wire: Arts and Crafts from the Heart Mountain Internment Camp, June 1-Sept. 6.
• Dressed Just Right: An Evolution of Western Style from Function to Flamboyance, June 3-Oct. 2.

The Corridor Gallery announces another debut showing of Casper artist Nicole Somerville. “Shade of Inclination.” The show opens with a reception on Friday, April 29 at 7 p.m. and continues through Sunday, May 1.

Nicole appreciates the trek and skill involved with a classic landscape of a well-known area but chooses to take a different approach. Rather than seeking the end of the path, Nicole finds inspiration along the path and skillfully creates an emotional image. Nicole’s tools are her imagination, medium format film camera, 35mm film camera and a digital SLR.

“I photograph what I describe as abstract landscapes. The color stories, shapes and different perspectives take center stage; unlike normal landscape photography that features the importance of a place, subject and certain time. I’ve traveled across country and many of my photos can be derived from my backyard, all the way to the grandeur of Arches National Park.  Either way, where the photo was taken is not important to me, what matters is what the piece creates beyond the subject.  In these pieces I hope to propose the viewer to experience atypical beauty and to blur the conventional line of what makes a photograph. Do not try to figure out what you are looking at or where it could be, just simply enjoy the encounter.”

Nicole K. Somerville, 24, born and educated in Michigan, Attended Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, and majored in photography and fine art.

Nicole comes from a highly creative family but is the first to pursue a career from art. Owes her obsession of photography to her mother, who had a camera ready to go 24/7, everywhere.

In June 2010 she came to visit Casper after meeting her boyfriend at a wedding she photographed earlier that spring.  Everything just fit right together, and she moved out here that August and has completely enjoyed every moment creating art in the west once again.

Her training is strongly derived in the fine art sense. Also studied ceramics in college, which believes to have given her well-rounded approach to photography.  The photography program she went through was based on film and a strong sense of art history.  Although film techniques are quickly disappearing the knowledge gained from it she believes will ultimately help her stand out in today’s art/photography community.

Somerville concludes: “Art is alive in so many corners of the United States, for a while all she could think about was getting to Europe to study art there, after this trip she realized the great resources and subjects that are currently happening on our home soil.”

Deadline approaching for 2011 Western and Wild Horse Art Show and Sale in Rock Springs

The 2011 Western and Wild Horse Art Show and Sale will be held July 8-9 at the Community Fine Arts Center in Rock Springs.

Application deadline is April 15.

This show has been held the past eight years with the assistance of the CFAC, Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce, Rock Springs Historical Museum and Sweetwater Travel and Tourism Board and the Wyoming Arts Council.

Student Art League Showing & Sale reception April 15 at WOW in Laramie

NIC receives $15,000 Wyoming Community Foundation grant

The Nicolaysen Art Museum & Discovery Center in Casper has been awarded a $15,000 grant from the Wyoming Community Foundation for general operating support. The grant was awarded by the Casper Area Community Foundation.

“It is support like this that allows the NIC to build programs that underscore the vibrancy of our exhibitions, collections and educational efforts,” NIC Executive Director Connie Gibbons said.

The grant was made possible through the Schneider Fund held by the Wyoming Community Foundation.  This charitable organization builds and preserves funds established by individuals, families, corporations, agencies, and private foundations. The foundation uses the earnings from these funds to benefit community needs across the state of Wyoming. For more information, go to www.wycf.org.

Opening reception for "inside/OUT" exhibit set for April 8 at Rawlins Main Street Gallery

Rawlins Main Street Gallery is excited to present inside/OUT, an exhibition of paintings by Mike Karr. The exhibition is being held in commemoration of the gallery’s two-year anniversary. An anniversary celebration and opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, April 8 from 5-8 PM at the gallery, and will introduce a number of new approaches to community art display in downtown Rawlins. 

For the first time ever, work by the gallery’s featured artist will be presented in a curated show that examines a specific theme. The event will also be the first at the gallery to offer guests beer on tap from Snowy Mountain Brewery in Saratoga. A selection of lounge music by artists on the label Cold Busted, owned and operated by Rawlins resident Derrick Daisey will be played throughout the evening. As always, the wine, non-alcoholic beverages and snacks gallery visitors have come to appreciate will also be served. This event is free and open to the public.

CIFF announces its 2011 film program April 14 at the Link Gallery in Cheyenne

The Cheyenne International Film Festival (CIFF) gets underway April 14 when its film program is released at the Link Gallery, 124 W. Lincolnway, Cheyenne. The reception will be catered by Suite 1901 with a wine tasting by the Table Mountain Vinyards of Huntley, Wyoming. It is held in conjunction with the First Thursday Art Design & Dine Walk through downtown Cheyenne.

The CIFF which opens at the Atlas Theatre May 19 will feature over 40 films of all genres from Wyoming, the U.S. and from around the world.

The CIFF Call2ACTion program links up with local nonprofit community-based issues. Films are screened with the organization or cause members participating on a panel discussing the film in the context of their local organization. This year’s Call2ACTion partners are the Safe House Cheyenne, the Wyoming Children’s Action Alliance, the VFW Post 1881, the Southeast Wyoming Intertribal Powwow Association and Grant Farms‘ Community Supported Agriculture program.

Cheyenne artist featured in Valhall Arts Retrospective in Fort Collins, Colo.

Work by Cheyenne artist Camellia El-Antably is featured in the Valhall Arts 3rd Anniversary Retrospective which opens this evening in Fort Collins, Colo. Camellia is the arts education specialist at the Wyoming Arts Council. "Hybrid" by Hilary Havlik opens March 21 at UW Union's Gallery 234
