A new art in public buildings sculpture was dedicated today at the state fairgrounds in Douglas. The sculpture resides in front of the show building, where kids of all ages show their animals. The sculpture captures a child who has just won a first prize ribbon, as her father carries her on his shoulder. The sculpture captures the movement of the father walking. Wyoarts was there for the ceremony, which included his wife MJ and daughter, the artist's parents, as well as the models for the sculpture, the State Fair Board, Miss Rodeo Wyoming and others involved with the process of getting the sculpture installed. Today was the first day of the state fair, and it looks to be a full and busy week.  

New public art project to be dedicated at fairgrounds on Aug. 16

Wyomingarts visited sculptor David Alan Clark's studio in Lander in June to view his work-in-progress, "The Champion." He was almost finished with it and was preparing to ship it to the Eagle Bronze Foundry for the bronze to be poured. The project is funded by the state's 1 Percent for Art/Art in Public Buildings program administered by the Wyoming Arts Council.

Join staff members of the Wyoming State Fair at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 16, as they celebrate the installation of a new sculpture at the State Fair Grounds just behind the horse barns.

"The Champion" is an over-life-sized bronze of a rancher carrying his daughter up on his shoulder in triumph. The daughter holds a Grand Champion rosette up high and wears a big grin. The rancher wears a smile of his own as he enjoys the fact that his daughter is following in his footsteps at the fair (note his own champion belt buckle).

"The sculpture celebrates the excitement of families competing at the state fair," said the artist, Green River native David Alan Clark.

Clark has installed monumental bronzes in Green River, Cheyenne and Ft. Bridger as well as across the country. You can see samples of his work on his website, www.davidalanclark.com.

Models for the sculpture were Wyoming residents Rhett Abernathy (currently playing arena football for the Casper Cavalry) and Kylee McConnell, the daughter of Mike and Angie McConnell of Lander.

The sculpture was cast at Eagle Bronze Foundry in Lander, making this an all-Wyoming project. Funding for the sculpture is from the state's 1% for Art/Art in Public Buildings program that dedicates a percentage of new construction budgets for art in or near state-funded buildings. The program is administered by the Wyoming Arts Council.

Fabian and Talbot sign books at State Museum

Two Wyoming authors, Linda Graves Fabian and Starley Talbot, will be at the Wyoming State Museum, Wednesday, June 9, 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 6:30 p.m., to sign their new books, “Douglas,” and “Fort Laramie,” respectively.

“Douglas,” by Graves Fabian and Carol Price Tripp, features a series of historical photographs chronicling the growth of the east-central Wyoming town. The photographs were provided through the generosity of Wyoming Pioneer Memorial Museum Executive Director Arlene Ekland-Earnst.

“Fort Laramie,” by Talbot, features historical photographs of one of the most important frontier outposts of the American West. These photographs are from the Fort Laramie National Historic Sites, state and national archives and the author, Talbot.

Both books are part of the Images of America series, which celebrates the history of neighborhoods, towns and cities across the country. Using archival photographs, each title presents the distinctive stores from the past that shape the character of the community today.

Arcadia Publishing release two new history books by authors from Wyoming

Jalan Crossland performs solo in Hartville

Jalan Crossland will be playing solo performances at the Miner's and Stockman's Bar, 608 W. Main St. in Hartville on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20.

Hartville is dangerously close to Glenrock, which Jalan sings about in "Don't Taze Me Bro." Those were dangerous days last summer when "Farmer Bud drove a tractor... in the Deer Creek Days Parade" in Glenrock. Farmer Bud ran afoul of the law and what ensued was a "low speed tractor chase." When the cops caught up to the lawbreaker, the elderly tractor jockey begged "Don't Taze Me Bro."

All for naught.

Call for entries: Platte River Photograph Show

Helga Bull, executive director of the Douglas Chamber of Commerce, sent out this letter that was forwarded to us by Douglas photographer Richard Olveda:

I am forwarding this message for your information. There are no awards, but sales from the show are okay. Pricing is up to you. "Photography" includes digitally altered entries also. Hope to see you there.

Everybody is invited to join us at the First Annual Platte River Photograph Show at the Pioneer Museum on Wednesday, January 20, 2010. 5-7 p.m. We will be having an open reception on Wednesday and the show will be exhibited at the museum through Friday, January 22. If you would like to enter a photograph, it must be matted , framed and submitted to the Pioneer Museum by Monday January 18. You then need to pick up your pictures on Monday, January 25. An application is available at the Douglas Chamber at the Depot of the Railroad Interpretative Center.

This is an open show, of any subject and you may submit up to 4 pictures.

I hope if you are unable to submit a photograph that you can visit with us on Wednesday, January 20th or see the exhibit till Friday, Jan 22nd at the Wyoming Pioneer Museum. We have some very talented people in the area and I hope to see you there!
