Cheyenne Little Theatre Players is proud to announce our 3rd Annual New Play Project Competition. The New Play Project Competition is a program created by the Cheyenne Little Theatre Players (CLTP) to encourage, recognize and support new and established playwrights and encourage new works in the field of dramatic literature.
We are currently seeking submissions from experienced or first-time playwrights in the seven state region of Utah, Idaho, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska and Colorado. Entries must be full-length plays that have not been performed previously; no film scripts or musicals are allowed. The winning stage play will receive a staged reading by CLTP during its 2011-2012 Season. The deadline for entries is March 31, 2011 and the winning entry will be announced by June 1, 2011.The winning playwright will receive a $250 cash award as well as a $200.00 stipend to assist with travel to Cheyenne to attend production meetings, auditions, rehearsals, and performances of the work. The competition entry fee is $20 per play submitted.

Jan Beatty's new book, Red Sugar, was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in Spring, 2008. Other books include Boneshaker and Mad River, winner of the 1994 Agnes Lynch Starrett Prize. Beatty's poetry has appeared in Quarterly West, Gulf Coast, Indiana Review, and Court Green, and in anthologies published by Oxford University Press, University of Illinois Press, and University of Iowa Press. Awards include the $15,000 Creative Achievement Award in Literature from the Heinz Foundation, the Pablo Neruda Prize for Poetry, and two fellowships from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. For the past thirteen years, she has hosted and produced "Prosody," a public radio show on NPR-affiliate WYEP-FM featuring the work of national writers. Beatty directs the creative writing program at Carlow University, where she runs the Madwomen in the Attic writing workshops and teaches in the MFA program.

Deadline draws nigh for WAC Blanchan & Doubleday writing awards
The postmark deadline for the 2011 Blanchan & Doubleday writing awards is Oct. 29, 2010.
The competition is open to Wyoming residents only, 18 or older.
The Neltje Blanchan Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script which is informed by a relationship with the natural world.
The Frank Nelson Doubleday Award, $1,000, is given for the best poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, or script written by a woman author.
Ohio fiction writer and poet Jeanne Bryner has agreed to serve as the juror for this year’s competition.

Deadline Oct. 15 for publishing seminar in NYC
The Center for Book Arts in New York City is now inviting applications for its upcoming Letterpress Printing & Fine Press Publishing Seminar for Emerging Writers (November 10-14). Deadline is Oct. 15.
Participants will attend lectures from printers, fine press publishers, book artists, and dealers to get a practical overview of letterpress printing and fine press publishing. They will learn the basics of letterpress printing, both traditional typesetting and options with new technology, by collaboratively printing a small edition of broadsides or other projects. This free workshop is most suitable for those with little or no previous letterpress experience.
Those selected must attend the entire five-day workshop. For further details and an application, click here.

Submissions from writers and artists are being accepted for the University of Wyoming's nationally acclaimed literary and arts journal, the Owen Wister Review.
Journal editors will select original works of fiction, poetry, photography and art for inclusion in the 2010 edition. Submission deadline is Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.
"We are expecting another great year and can't wait to start looking through this year's submissions," says Joshua Watanabe, OWR editor.
In October, OWR won its second Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award.

The 2010 Green Book Festival will consider published, self-published and independent publisher works in the following categories: non-fiction, fiction, children's books, teenage, how-to, audio/spoken word, comics/graphic novels, poetry, science fiction/horror, biography/autobiography, gardening, cookbooks, animals, photography/art, e-books, wild card (anything goes!), scientific, white paper, legal, business, mystery and spiritual.
Entries can be in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese or Italian. Our grand prize for the 2010 Green Book Festival Author of the Year is $1500 and transportation to our April 30-May 2, 2010 outdoor festival in Los Angeles as part of the LA Garden Show OR an equivalent amount donated in your name to the environmental charity of your choice.

Hedgebrook, a retreat for women writers, is currently accepting applications for its 2010 residency program. Located off the coast of Seattle on Whidbey Island, WA, Hedgebrook is home to six handcrafted cottages, numerous hiking trails that meander through lush forest, and a communal farmhouse where residents gather in the evenings to share meals. Applicants may be at any stage of their writing careers and engaged in any genre. Applications, which include two personal essays and a writing sample, must be postmarked no later than September 24. Residencies are free, though participants must provide their own travel arrangements.

For artists working in photography, artists’ books, digital video, multimedia, and film, the Visual Studies Workshop offers one-month residencies at its stately facilities in Rochester, NY. Residencies are project-based, and visiting artists are provided unlimited access to VSW, housing on the premises, and a $2,000 honorarium. Facilities include a darkroom, production and post-production equipment for both 16mm film and analog video, a digital photography lab, and a Macintosh computer lab. Applications for residencies in 2010 must include work samples, a project description, a résumé, and a SASE.

Brooklyn’s artist-run A.I.R. Gallery, a not-for-profit space dedicated to exhibiting the work of women artists, offers emerging artists the opportunity to work closely with the gallery as part of an 18-month fellowship program. Participating artists will develop their work in provided studio space, as well as build relationships with other artists and professionals in the arts, including one-on-one studio visits with prominent curators and academics. The fellowship culminates in a solo exhibition for each participating artist. The fellowship runs from March 2010 to July 2010, during which time fellows will be expected to attend regular meetings, gallery-sit once a month, and contribute to the programming of A.I.R. Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre is currently holding a playwriting competition for educational and professional playwrights. The Forest Roberts Theatre Playwriting Award includes a fully mounted production of the winning play during the upcoming theater season, classroom and media appearances, and a $2,000 cash prize. The winning playwright will be flown out to Marquette, MI, for the week that his or her play is staged, and will be provided room and board for the duration of the stay. The playwright may also be asked to participate in a script development workshop in the summer, an opportunity to work with a professional dramaturge, director, and cast. (Transportation, room, and board will also be provided for this opportunity.) Entries must be original, full-length plays, and must not have been previously produced or published. A complete set of submission and entry rules, as well as information on past winners, are available on the Forest Roberts Theatre website.

Ed Warsaw dropped into WAC HQ today to talk about poetry.
He's been shepherding the publication of the Serendipity Poets annual anthology for a lot of years. He's now seeking submissions for the 14th annual edition.
So, please submit poems in all forms, 32 lines or less, geared for a general audience (G-rated) to:

Postmark deadline for Blanchan/Doubleday writing awards is Oct. 30
The postmark deadline for applications to the Neltje Blanchan and Frank Nelson Doubleday Memorial Writing Awards is Friday, Oct. 30, 2009.
The $1,000 Blanchan Award is given to a writer whose work, in any literary genre, is inspired by nature. The $1,000 Doubleday Award is given to the best manuscript submitted by a woman author.
To apply, you must be at least 18 years old and a Wyoming resident.
The competition is sponsored by the Wyoming Arts Council and funded by artist and arts patron Neltje from Banner.
Judge for the competition is Aaron A. Abeyta, a poet, novelist and and professor of English at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. His first poetry collection, Colcha, received both an American Book Award and the Colorado Book Award. His second poetry collection was As Orion Falls, published by Ghost Road Press in Denver. Abeyta’s first novel, Rise, Do Not Be Afraid, was published in 2007 by Ghost Road Press. He is the recipient of a Colorado Council on the Arts fellowship for poetry. He earned an M.F.A. in creative writing from Colorado State University.

For the second round of our writing contest, we want you to send us original works of fiction that begin with this sentence: "The nurse left work at five o'clock."
One entry per person, and no more than 600 words please! Stories must be received by 11:59 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
We'll post a favorite story every week until James Wood picks this round's winner and reads his or her story on the air. The winner will also receive a signed copy of Wood's book, "How Fiction Works."
