Buy a ticket to win a quilt

The Wyoming State Quilt Guild (WSQG) is selling tickets for a chance to win the quilt, "Scottie's Victory"  (image), pieced and quilted by Jan Barnett of Shell, WY. The pattern was taken from the Eleanor Burns book, Victory Quilts. Jan added her own special touches.

Each year an Opportunity Quilt is made and raffled to raise funds for the organization. WSQG donates quilting books to each Wyoming county library. It also supports educational activities through Kids' Camp, which are held throughout the state. Young people ages 8-12 construct a quilt with WSOG providing teachers and partial funding for supplies.

Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Please direct inquiries to Elaine Decker, 307-347-6382, for info on a WSQG member who may be selling tickets in your town or area.

Also, quilters will be gathering in Powell, July 14-17 for Quilt Wyoming's "Simple Pleasures" festival.




Work by Cheyenne's Phillippa Lack to be exhibited at Verona Tassile March 8-13

Hummingbirdminds always likes to hear good news from Wyoming artists.

Phillippa Lack of Cheyenne notified us that her work, "Ascent" (pictured above), that was submitted to "The Silk Roads Meet in Verona" contest, has been selected by the jury to be exhibited in Verona, Italy, for Verona Tessile, March 8-13, 2011. Phillippa didn’t say whether or not she’s attending the event.

The artist’s entries, “Night Flowers” and “Pastel,” were selected by Juror Pamela Allen for SAQA¹s juried exhibition Volusia Wrapped in Fiber in Gateway Center for the Arts, DeBary, Fla. Out of 323 quilts submitted by 118 artists, the judge selected 98 quilts by 61 artists.

Of the work, Pamela said, “The high quality of the entries for this show, and the diversity of creative expression made jurying a real treat. I had no specific agenda but the main thing for me is that the work should be ART and recognizable as such.”

The exhibition will open at Gateway on February 15 and end on April 6. There will be an artist¹s reception on February 20th from 2-4 p.m. There will also be a Gathering Threads Biannual meeting of open to all fiber artists on February 26 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

"Hold Me" at Clay Paper Scissors for next Arts Design and Dine event Nov. 11 in Cheyenne

Clay Paper Scissors in downtown Cheyenne presents "Hold Me," a show by Meghan Cochrane, for November's Art, Design and Dine. The opening is on November 11 from 5-8 pm. Meghan's Artist's Statement:

I started this series my senior year of college after seeing an installation that incorporated thread. I was compelled to revive the embroidery skills I had learned as a kid. Little did I know that it would jump start my explorations in the fiber arts and change the direction and focus of my work.

I wanted the interaction with my embroidery to be tactile. So often embroidery is framed on a wall or blends into furnishings and is forgotten. I started embroidering into baby dolls because there is the unmistakable urge to hold and touch a baby doll. The images I embroidered are all symbolic of ideas or events that occurred in my life during the embroidery process. Each baby doll becomes a diary entry. They interpret my transition from college to the working world.

The quilts were created to use up the beautiful fabrics that I would find at thrift stores. I wanted to work with unconventional combinations and patterns to explore the idea of being swaddled in rags.

Dona will be one of the artists exhibiting and selling their work when The Laramie Artists Project presents the 5th biennial “Touchstone Laramie” on Saturday, Nov.13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 14, from 1-5 p.m at the Fairfield Inn in Laramie. Quilting is Dinomyte

The Wyoming State Quilt Guild Southwest Region is hosting Quilt Wyoming 2010's "Quilting is Dinomyte," July 15-18 at Western Wyoming Community College. Quilt classes, a vendor mall and quilt display will be offered, as well as quilt entries in the Challenge and Opportunity categories for judging.

Registration must be postmarked by April 15, 2010.
