Dine on traditional foods of the Jewish culture at Casper College Humanities Festival

From Casper College:

Traditional foods of the Jewish culture will be served at the next Casper College Ethnic Dinner on Thursday, Feb. 24, in conjunction with the 26th Annual Casper College Humanities Festival February 23-25.

Dishes to be served at the dinner include three entrees: Ashkenazi beef brisket, citrus-baked fish with rhubarb, and potato pierogies with caramelized onions, which is vegetarian. The side dishes include noodle kugel, carrot and sweet potato tzimmes, matzo ball soup, and Sephardic salad with nuts and dried fruits. For dessert, mini rugalah is tentatively planned.

Advance tickets for the Traditional Jewish Dishes ethnic dinner will be sold through Friday, Feb. 18 at a cost of $8.50 each. Tickets will also be available at the door for $11 for adults, $7 for ages 6 through 12, and free for children 5 and under. Tax will be added to all ticket purchases. Because dinners often sell out, advanced ticket purchases are highly recommended.

Tickets may be purchased at the Accounting and Financial Management Office, located in the Liesinger Administration Building, Room 103; the Roberts Commons Cafeteria; and the coffee bars in the Liesinger Administration Building and the Wold Physical Science Center. Cash is accepted at all locations and credit cards are accepted at the cafeteria and coffee bars.

The final dinner in this year's series will be Hungarian with a special presentation by the Casper College forensics team on April 14.

The ethnic dinner series is sponsored by the Casper College Diversity Committee, and is presented by Sodexo Campus Dining under Justin Dreslinski with the menu composed by Chef Josh Kronberg.

Symposium for artists set for Aug. 5-6 at the Nicolaysen Art Museum in Casper

"What’s in Your Business Toolkit?"

A Symposium on the Nuts and Bolts of Managing an Artistic Career will utilize business and creative skills to enhance your visibility as an artist. It is a business development symposium for visual artists at the Nicolaysen Art Museum on August 5-6.

Many artists wonder if it’s possible to make a living doing what they love most.

This two-day smorgasbord of information will illuminate the processes of becoming more visible and financially successful as an artist.

Tips, tricks, professional insights, as well as business skills and development will all be addressed in this symposium.

This symposium will present sessions and panelists that will explore the following subjects: Legal & Finance, Crafting a Business Plan, Marketing, Technology, Pricing & Value, and Accounting.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 5

9 a.m.: Introduction

10 a.m.: Accounting 101. This session on basic bookkeeping and accounting will help improve your profitability and teach how to calculate breakeven sales.

11:30 a.m.: Lunch Break

12:30 p.m.: Marketing. This session will explore business professionalism, the art of networking, customer/client cultivation, how to draft artist statements, resume packets, and letters (including proposals and cover letters), how to introduce your work professionally, avoiding market saturation and how to find the right representation or art festival for you.

2:30 p.m.: How to Craft a Business Plan. This session will go over the elements of a good business plan and utilize market research to predict sales.

5 p.m.: Evening Reception (with cash bar)

FRIDAY, AUGUST 6

8:30 a.m.: Technology. This session will deal with utilizing and becoming familiar with social and media networks o increase visibility, as well as step by step instructions to creating a presence online.

10:30 a.m.: Legal and Finance. In this session, the ins and outs of drafting and negotiating dealer/festival/museum contracts, and copyright agreements will be analyzed. Also, the options and steps artists should be taking for future financing opportunities will also be discussed.

Noon: Lunch Break

1 p.m.: Pricing & Value I

3 p.m.: Pricing & Value II

These sessions will expore understanding your marketplace, evaluating your work for sale, establishing price points and range—and want to go solobucking the system. Local/regional/national artists discuss how they achieved success in the art world and share personal experiences.

Chris Paine: "Who Killed the Electric Car?"

Filmmaker Chris Paine will speak on Thursday, April 8, 7:30 p.m., in the Fine Arts Concert Hall at University of Wyoming in Laramie. His presentation is part of the Shepard Symposium on Social Justice.

Chris Paine is a filmmaker and environmentalist living in Los Angeles. "Who Killed the Electric Car?" premiered at the Sundance in 2006 before its worldwide release by Sony Pictures Classics. Chris also produced "Faster" with Ewan McGregor about the world's fastest motorcycle race, and "No Maps For These Territories," a road trip with cyberpunk author, William Gibson and featuring U2 front-man, Bono.

Outside of film, Chris was an early player in California’s dotcom boom with his firm Internet Outfitters. His company Mondo-tronics, provided materials for the Mars Pathfinder mission. Paine’s activist work includes campaigns to protect forests and to curb US nuclear programs. He supports the Black Rock Arts Foundation, the Rainforest Action Network and Plug-In America. Chris's talk is entitled, "How many lightbulbs does it take to plug in the electric car?" and is about the politics, activism, zeitgeist and cold hard business reasons for return of the electric car . This presentation begins with a quick recap of "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and the reasons for its rise and fall in 1990s California. It then picks up where the first documentary left off and presents the reason for the incredible turn of events for the electric car as we are chronicling in "Revenge of the Electric Car."

Noted author/researcher Dr. Randall Eaton to speak at outdoor education symposium

Dr. Randall Eaton, author of "From Boys to Men of Heart: Hunting as Rite of Passage," will be the keynote speaker at the Big Horn Basin Outdoor Education Symposium on Saturday, Jan. 16. He will speak at the morning session at the Days Inn in Thermopolis at 10:05 a.m. His topic will be "Finding New Pathways in the Old." At 7:05 p.m. at the Worland Community Center, he will talk about "Hunting as a Rite of Passage."

Dr. Eaton has written and edited 14 books. They include "Cheetah: Biology, Behavior and Conservation of an Endangered Species (Van Nostrand Reinhold, 1974), which was recognized by the American Library Association as “one of the outstanding scientific-technical books of 1974.” "The Cheetah: Fastest Race on Earth, (Dutton, 1981)" was recognized as “An outstanding science book for young readers,” by the National Science Teachers Association-Childrens Book Council Joint Committee.

Two other recent books are:
"The Orca Project: A Meeting of Nations," an anthology of story, essay and poetry, published in fall 1998.
"The Sacred Hunt: Hunting as a Sacred Path," a 1998 anthology of story, essay and poetry.

I would like to invite you to attend and/or help spread the word about our biennial John R. Milton Writers' Conference, scheduled October 29-31, 2009, at The University of South Dakota in Vermillion. This year's conference theme is "Frontier Technology/Techno-Frontiers: Technology and the American West," and there will be writers and scholars coming to the U. from all over the country to explore this theme in both creative readings and critical papers organized into two full days of panel sessions.

We also have a very exciting roster of featured authors reading at the conference, including a special keynote reading by Maxine Hong Kingston (shown in above photo by David Shankbone), as well as readings by Allison Hedge Coke, Wang Ping, Robert A. Roripaugh, Jim Reese, and Jim Coppoc. USD creative writing faculty Ed Allen, Brian Bedard, and Lee Ann Roripaugh will also give featured readings of their work as well, per Milton Conference tradition.
