Jackson Hole Rock & Roll Camp

This unique multi-day clinic allows students to develop their individual skills in the context of a real rock band, rehearsing and performing with other student musicians and faculty professionals. Rock & Roll Camp is full of intense instruction, practical playing experience, and loads of fun!

Musicians in this camp include drummers, bassists, guitar players, vocalists, horn players, and others. Potential students must be at least going into the 6th grade in the fall of 2011, and they must have been studying their instrument for a minimum of one year.

John Byrne Cooke screens rare footage of Janis Joplin March 13 in Jackson

"Janis Joplin: Rare Footage," a program to benefit the Jackson Hole Writers Conference, will take place on Sunday, March 13, 7 p.m., in the Center for the Arts Theatre in Jackson. Tickets are $15.

John Byrne Cooke was Janis Joplin's road manager from late 1967 until her untimely death in October 1970. Despite the demands of his road-managing duties, he managed to document his time with Janis not only with still photos that have been widely published and exhibited, but also in 8mm film that shows Joplin offstage as well as in performance. Now John has edited his unique footage into five remarkable films. Four have been shown in public only once before, at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 2009, at a tribute event for Janis. The fifth film has never before been exhibited. John will introduce each film and will take questions at the end of the program.

The New Mastersounds starts western tour March 1 in Jackson

On Tuesday, March 1, The New Mastersounds will begin touring through the West. Town Square Tavern will be hosting the tour opener right here in Jackson Hole. Once again, Fox Street All Stars from Colorado will be supporting the date and the tour at large. This summer at the Pink Garter Theater, this same double bill brought the house down with 400 people.

Advance tickets are recommended as the capacity of the Town Square Tavern is less than that of other venues the band has played here in the past. They are available NOW at our Calendar/Buy Tickets tab and are going steadily.

Music starts at 9 p.m. and goes until last call.

Detroit performance poet and 60s psychedelic music pioneer team up for Feb. 26 show in Cheyenne

Detroit author and performance poet M.L. Liebler and L.A. musician Peter Lewis (shown in photo at right) one of the founding members of Moby Grape, will perform at the Historic Atlas Theatre in downtown Cheyenne on Saturday, Feb. 26. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $5, $3 for students, military and seniors (including over-the-hill hippies).

On Sunday, Feb. 27, Peter and M.L. will conduct a free public workshop at the Laramie County Public Library from 2-4 p.m.

On Monday, Feb. 28, M.L. will serve as one of three judges for the 2011 Wyoming Poetry Out Loud competition. The competition begins at 7 p.m. at the Atlas Theatre. Peter will perform a short performance during intermission. This event is free and open to the public.

These events are all sponsored by the Wyoming Arts Council, the Poetry Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Here is some bio info on M.L. and Peter:

One of our judges for the Poetry Out Loud event will be M.L. Liebler, a mover and shaker in the Detroit poetry scene. He has written several books of poetry including the 2001 Finalist for The Paterson Poetry Prize and was winner of The 2001 Wayne State University Board of Governors’ Award. He has read and worked with Ed Sanders, Diane di Prima, Michael McClure, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Kesey, Timothy Leary & William Burroughs.

In addition, Liebler has recorded his poetry with such musical legends as Al Kooper, Country Joe McDonald, Jorma Kaukonen, Mike Watt, The Magic Poetry Band and many others. Liebler also edited the recently released anthology, Working Words: Punching the Clock and Kicking Out the Jams, (Coffee House Press).

M.L. has worked with the Wyoming Arts Council before – as one of the judges for the FY 2002 creative writing fellowships and as a presenter at one of the last ARTSPEAK conferences, held in Jackson in the fall of 2001. As director of the Detroit YMCA Writer's Voice, he came to Cheyenne in 2002-2003 at the request of the YMCA to conduct poetry and music presentations and workshops with Woodstock legend Country Joe MacDonald.

Peter Lewis is a founding member of the 1960s band Moby Grape. Their debut album was released in 1967, and it is still to this day one of the most revered rock albums of all times according to Rolling Stone magazine and other cultural critics. The band's energetic and hyper-exciting combination of folk, blues, and country was a unique sound to rock & roll. It was a new kind of American roots music but the band's career never took off the way it should have, due to personal tragedies. It took Peter Lewis a long time to shake off the troubled legacy of his band and begin to make his mark again with a stellar singer/songwriting recording career. Up-and-coming Cheyenne band performs tonight at the Cheyenne YMCA parking lot party

Another Kind of Magic, a blues/rock band from Cheyenne, will be performing on Friday, Aug. 20, 5-7 p.m., at the Cheyenne Family YMCA's annual summer parking lot party. The concert is free and open to the public.

The group has been garnering lots of attention lately (including posts on this blog), not only for their talents but for their youth. Band members are Taylor Scott, 16, lead guitarist and vocalist; the Uribe brothers -- bassist Louis, 16 and rhythm guitarist Mike, 13; Taylor's brother and keyboardist, Evan Scott, 14; and drummer Mason Carberry, 14.

Cody Burrows will be performing at the Storyteller Bookstore, 528 Broadway, in Thermopolis on Friday, Nov. 27, 4 p.m. He will be joined by Jake Austin on the lead and slide guitar and Mandela on bass. The concert is free and open to the public. Cody's new CD, "Nothing Goes to Waste," will be on sale at the store.

Cody grew up in Thermopolis and played trumpet in the Thermopolis H.S. band.

Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes perform in UW Union Ballroom Nov. 11

New Orleans band Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes will perform a free concert Wednesday, Nov. 11, at 8 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Union ballroom in Laramie.

Offbeat magazine selected the funk/rock style band's debut album, "Bandicoot," as the "2003 Best Rock Album by a Louisiana Artist." Other awards include "Best Emerging Roots Rock Band" and "The Big Easy Entertainment Award." Their other albums are "Live at the Spleaf," "Pain, Pleasure, Fear and Opera," and their latest release, "The Big Awesome."

"Their music has energy that fuels a crowd to get up and dance," says Stephanie Meyer of the Student Activities Council that sponsors the concert.

Sixties bands reunite -- and contemporary artists exhibit -- to support a good cause

Recovery Rally is the annual fundraiser of the 12-24 Club, an organization that provides help for drug and alcohol addictions. This year, the rally committee pulled together several of the biggest bands from Casper in the 1950s, '60s and '70s.

Several bands will be performing, including The Eddies & Butterfat (now the No Class Reunion Band), the NoVells, Chinook and the JD Blues Band.

Special guests include members of the bands BC and the Cavemen, The Monday People and Arnolt and the Raspberries.

The Rally is from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Parkway Plaza in Casper. Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door; available at Sonic Rainbow, Casper Events Center, S.A.M.E. Music and the 12-24 Club.

Art show: Some of the former band members playing at the Recovery Rally now make their living as artists. A show of eight artists -- four from the reunited bands, four from the local area -- will accompany the Rally. The show will open TODAY at the Parkway Plaza and the art will be auctioned SATURDAY. Proceeds will benefit the 12-24 Club.

Internationally-shown artist Paul Huber will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the sale of an original oil painting to the club.

The After Party: This will feature art sales, music and a chance to reconnect with old friends. It will be THURSDAY at the Wolcott Galleria, 136 S. Wolcott, in the old Odd Fellows Building. The party is being held in conjunction with a free open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. to celebrate the addition of the Odd Fellows building to the National Register of Historic Places.
