Jazz innovator Steve Turre joins Wyoming Jazz Ensemble for concerts in Laramie and New York City

The Wyoming Jazz Ensemble, the University of Wyoming's premiere jazz group, will present a public concert during the Festival of Winds at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, in the UW Arts and Sciences auditorium.

Directed by Scott Turpen, the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble regularly earns the highest ratings at national jazz festivals, and much acclaim for accompanying some of the biggest names in jazz music.
The concert will feature Downbeat Award-winning trombonist Steve Turre. One of the world's preeminent jazz innovators, Turre has consistently won both the readers' and critics' polls in "JazzTimes," "Downbeat," and "Jazziz" for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells).
Turre has released several recordings and worked with a diverse list of musicians from the jazz, Latin and pop worlds, including Ray Charles, Woody Shaw, Art Blakey, Dizzy Gillespie, McCoy Tyner, J.J. Johnson, Herbie Hancock, Lester Bowie, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Van Morrison, Pharoah Sanders, Horace Silver, Max Roach and Rahsaan Roland Kirk.
Turre also has been a member of NBC's Saturday Night Live Band since 1984.
Following the performance on campus, the Wyoming Jazz Ensemble will fly to New York City for two performances with Turre at the famous jazz club, Smoke, Monday, Feb. 21.
"This is a great opportunity for UW students to perform in a huge venue with an artist of Turre's caliber," Turpen says.

44th annual Kinser Jazz Festival Feb. 8-9 at Casper College
The 44th Annual Kinser Jazz Festival at Casper College will host more than 60 middle and high school vocal and instrumental groups during the two-day festival Feb. 8 and 9.
Each group will have 30 minutes to set up, perform and tear down. Each 30-minute performance will include a brief clinic with an adjudicator. Following the public performance each group will receive written comments, rating scores (if required), and a digital video recording of its performance and a 30-minute private clinic with an adjudicator.
There are six adjudicators for this year’s festival – three vocal and three instrumental. The vocal adjudicators are Ayo Awosika, Robert Lawrence, and Kelsey Shiba. The instrumental adjudicators are John Davis, Tyler Gilmore, and Andrew Stonerock.

Combining the artistry of food and music at Casper College

Mardi Gras-inspired dishes will be served at the next Casper College Ethnic Dinner on Thursday, Jan. 27, in the Roberts Commons Cafeteria from 5-6:30 p.m.
The Mardi Gras celebration will feature chicken and andouille jambalaya, crawfish court bouillon, okra etouffee, gazebo garden gumbo, confetti chopped salad, red beans and rice, ratatouille, and bananas foster for dessert.
The dinner will feature live music to promote the upcoming Kinser Jazz Festival Feb. 8 and 9 at Casper College.
Advance tickets for the Mardi Gras ethnic dinner will be sold through Friday, Jan. 21 at a cost of $8.50 each. Tickets will also be available at the door for $11 for adults, $7 for ages 6 through 12, and free for children five and under. Tax will be added to all ticket purchases. Because dinners often sell out, advanced ticket purchases are highly recommended.
Tickets may be purchased at the Accounting and Financial Management Office, located in the Leisinger Administration Building, Room 103; the Roberts Commons Cafeteria; and the coffee bars in the Leisinger Administration Building and the Wold Physical Science Center. Cash is accepted at all locations and credit cards are accepted at the cafeteria and coffee bars.
The final two dinners in this year's series will be traditional Jewish dishes featured in conjunction with the Casper College Humanities Festival on February 24, and Hungarian with a special presentation by the Casper College Forensics team on April 14.
The ethnic dinner series is sponsored by the Casper College Diversity Committee, and is presented by Sodexo Campus Dining under Justin Dreslinski with the menu composed by Chef Josh Kronberg.

Kinser Jazz Festival tickets now on sale for Grammy-winning Yellowjackets

Tickets are now on sale for the Casper College Kinser Jazz Festival concert featuring the jazz-instrumental group Yellowjackets on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m.
The two-time Grammy Award-winning Yellowjackets, first formed in 1977, now feature original members Russell Ferrante (keyboards) and Jimmy Haslip (bass), along with Bob Mintzer (saxophone) and Will Kennedy (drums).
The group's 2008 album "Lifecycle" was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album and Ferrante was nominated for Best Instrumental Composer for the track "Claire's Closet" at the 2009 Grammy Awards. The group won a Grammy in 1986 for Best R&B Instrumental Performance and again in 1988 for Best Jazz Fusion Performance.
"Yellowjackets is known for the group's blending of jazz and funk, and are considered to be among the premier working jazz bands. We are thrilled to have the group as the headline act for this concert,* said
Jerome Fleg, jazz festival director.
Opening for Yellowjackets will be the Wyoming All-State Jazz Band, under the direction of Erik Applegate, jazz bassist and composer.
The Kinser Jazz Festival, now in its 44th year, provides a setting for high school and junior high/middle school band and choir ensembles to perform in a noncompetitive setting over a two-day period, according to Fleg.
Tickets for the Tuesday night concert featuring Yellowjackets are $15 each and may be purchased by calling the Casper College Music Department at 307-268-2606.

Double-bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons performs at UW Nov. 17
Double-bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons, joined by guitar and percussion, will perform at the University of Wyoming at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, in the Fine Arts concert hall.

"The music includes Celtic, tango, Andalusian folk, African, Latin American and Indian traditions, although Garcia-Fons describes it as ‘Mediterranean rim, Latin America, flamenco, and jazz'," says Cedric Reverand, UW Cultural Programs director. "When we first heard the trio, we thought they came from Brazil. This is jazz, with the polyrhythms one would expect, but with a melodic richness and harmonic inventiveness that listeners may well find surprising."
Garcia-Fons has had rigorous training in classical music, receiving an advanced degree from the Conservatoire da la Ville de Paris. US magazine commends Garcia-Fons for "command of orchestration, and profound skills as an instrumentalist," which "place him in an echelon truly deserving the accolade of ‘genius.'"

The 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Awards Ceremony & Concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. in Rose Theater at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center at Broadway at 60th Street and feature the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in a program dedicated to the honorees’ works. Joining the orchestra will be several of the honorees performing, including Mr. Liebman, Mr. Laws, and the Marsalis Family. The evening also will feature video tributes to each of the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters.
The awards ceremony and concert will be broadcast live on WBGO Jazz 88.3FM based in Newark, New Jersey, and Sirius/XM Satellite Radio's Real Jazz Channel 70. WBGO also will audio stream the event live on their website at wbgo.org.
Prior to the concert, the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters and their fellow NEA Jazz Masters will gather for a group photo opportunity. Jazz artist Stefon Harris performs at UW

Grammy-nominated jazz artist, Stefon Harris, will perform Thursday and Friday, Sept. 30-Oct. 1, at the University of Wyoming in Laramie.
Harris will first appear with the UW jazz ensemble Thursday, Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m. in the College of Arts & Sciences auditorium.
His second appearance, part of the fall Cultural Programs' concert series, is with his ensemble, Blackout, Friday, Oct. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center concert hall.
Tickets for Thursday's performance cost $10 for the public, $6 for students and $7 for senior citizens. Tickets for Friday's performance cost $25 for the public, $21 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts or call (307) 766-6666.
Tickets are also available at the Wyoming Union information desk and Fine Arts box office. Their hours are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and one hour before each scheduled performance.

Harris' first three CDs were nominated for Grammy awards, with the second and third nominated for Best Jazz Album and Best Jazz Instrumental Solo. His first CD was named "Best Jazz CD" of the year by Newsweek.

Seattle jazz band Jubilee and UW a capella group The Bettys perform at UW Sept. 24-25
Seattle-based band, Jubilee, will team with the Bettys, UW's women's a capella group, Saturday, Sept. 25, at 7 p.m. in the University of Wyoming College of Agriculture auditorium to raise awareness about what ordinary citizens can do to fight human trafficking.
Jubilee will also perform an evening of Brazilian jazz with UW performers from the Luso Brazilian Club and UW music professor Rubia Santos at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24, at The Gardens in the lower level of the Wyoming Union.
Both performances are free and open to the public and are funded by ASUW.
Jubilee is a collective of five abolitionists/musicians who use the stage and merchandise table to raise awareness and funds to fight modern slavery and support those recovering from its effects. Jubilee strives to be a mouthpiece for the millions of human beings under the bondage of modern slavery.
Jubilee spokesperson Curtis Romjue said 27 million men, women and children around the world are forced to lead lives as slaves. Although this exploitation is often not called slavery, the conditions are the same. People are sold like objects, forced to work for little or no pay and are at the mercy of their 'employers'.
Sponsors for the UW event include ASUW, Amnesty International, the Good Mule Project, Wyoming Law Students for Equal Justice, the UW Provost's Office, Campus Ventures, the Luso Brazilian Club and the UW Women's Studies Program.

According to the New York Times, "His brand of crisp articulation and blues-inflected harmony evokes another era . . . multifaceted and dynamic." Playing a funky brand of jazz that blends blues, R&B and even rock and roll, he has a CD devoted entirely to Elvis hits.
Chestnut began his career as a gospel pianist for the Mount Calvary Star Baptist Church in Baltimore beginning at the age of six. After graduating from the Peabody Institute, which he entered at the age of nine, and the Berklee College of Music, he became a sideman for such jazz legends as Wynton Marsalis, Dizzy Gillespie, Terence Blanchard, Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea, Isaac Hayes, James Carter and Betty Carter.
He is now an established soloist with several top-selling CDs to his credit. He can boast that he has not only played with Count Basie, but he has also played Count Basie in Robert Altman's flim, "Kansas City."

Wyoming Public Media expands jazz and classical networks

Wyoming Public Media's Classical Wyoming and Jazz Wyoming networks expanded this week with the addition of service to Thermopolis, Riverton and much of north-central Wyoming on KUWT 91.3 FM Thermopolis and to Cheyenne over KUWR 91.9 FM.
The transmitters are now broadcasting Classical Wyoming on their digital HD-2 signal and Jazz Wyoming on HD-3.
"Several years ago Wyoming Public Media invested in the digital conversion of its statewide network of transmitters," says Program Director Roger Adams. "This allowed us to launch all-classical and all-jazz networks using digital HD (hybrid digital) technology. We have added service to more areas of the state."
Classical Wyoming provides the classics 24 hours daily with news headlines from the BBC each hour. It is now available at:

Take 6 to headline Kinser Jazz Festival Feb. 9
A cappella powerhouse Take 6 are the winners of 10 GRAMMY Awards, 10 Dove Awards, one Soul Train Award and two NAACP Image Award nominations. The influential sextet – Mark Kibble, Claude V. McKnight III, Dr. Cedric Dent, David Thomas, Alvin Chea and Joey Kibble – headlines the 2010 Kinser Jazz Festival at Casper College.Their recent album. The Standard, showcases a new jazz-influenced approach for the group.
“While we sing lyrics that always exemplify our spiritual and moral convictions, what we really are at the core is a jazz vocal group,” says David Thomas, a member of the Take 6 lineup since 1985. “So we decided to do an album of jazz standards, a record that will stand up as the jazz vocal album for all time.”
Take 6 co-founder Claude McKnight also stands behind the ambitious claim. “We go into every project saying it will be the best,” he says. “At least the best we’ve ever done, and depending on the concept or the genre, it may be the best that’s ever been done by anyone. When we take on a project or step into a new phase of our career, we’re not afraid to say, ‘Hey, let’s move some mountains.’”

Donkey Creek Jazz Festival receives NEA grant
Northern Wyoming Community College District in Sheridan has received a $10,000 Challenge America FastTrack grant to support the Donkey Creek Jazz Festival at its Gillette campus. The free, outdoor event will feature artists including pianist Dana Landry, bassist Erik Applegate, and the Scott Turpen Jazztet.
Patrice Walker Powell, deputy chairman for States, Regions and Local Arts Agencies at the National Endowment for the Arts, notified the Wyoming Arts Council that the NWCCD’s Donkey Creek Jazz festival was one of 170 Challenge America FastTrack grants totaling $1,700,000 in awards to organizations throughout the United States. These grants offer support for projects that extend the reach of the arts to underserved populations. Applicants may apply under one of the four following project types: guest artist, civic design, public art, and cultural tourism.

UW Cultural Programs' Series Continues Oct. 16 with Jazz Legend
New Orleans R&B legend Allen Toussaint is coming back to the University of Wyoming for an encore performance.
Toussaint made his UW Cultural Programs debut in 2007, and the audience was so receptive, he has been invited back. He will perform Friday, Oct. 16, in the Fine Arts Center concert hall, starting at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets cost $23 for the public and $19 for senior citizens and students. Tickets are available by calling the Fine Arts Center box office at (307) 766-6666 or at the Web site www.uwyo.edu/finearts.
A producer, songwriter, pianist and vocalist, Toussaint has written music for, among others, The Rolling Stones, Robert Palmer, Otis Redding, Al Hirt, Lee Dorsey, the Pointer Sisters, Harry Connick Jr. and Elvis Costello. His recent CD with Costello was nominated for a Grammy.
"Winner of the Grammy Trustees' Award (a sort of "lifetime achievement award"), BBC Radio 2's 'Jazz Artist of the Year, Toussaint, as a musician and producer, has been the motive force for the New Orleans music scene for nearly five decades," says UW Cultural Programs Director Cedric Reverand. "This will be a rare opportunity to see an actual American legend. He's such a legend, you can even get a U.S. Postal Service commemorative Toussaint envelope."

Annually, Cultural Programs brings a variety of internationally-known performers to campus.

Japan Arts Day in Casper features Akemi Iwase
"Japan Arts Day" features Akemi Iwase on Saturday, Sept. 19, 7:30 p.m., in the John F. Welsh Auditorium at Natrona County High School in Casper. This event is free and open to the public.Here's more info from the ARTCORE web site:
Akemi began composing music at age 12, and at age 16, she created many original songs with Shuji Someno, a poet. During a folk song boom, she performed the original songs, and when she was 18, she formed a jazz band and performed at a nightclub in Ginza, Tokyo and in jazz cafes.
She formed a rock'n'roll Band, the Foxy Lady, with Keiko Watanabe. At age 20, Akemi moved to the U.S.A. with great aspirations. She lived in New York and Hawaii and got married. She performed piano and sang in the Queen Kapiolani Hotel. In 1974, she moved to California where she accompanied a magician and gave concerts. Inspired by traditional Nairobi music by Hamza El Din, she started arranging Japanese traditional folk songs, Minyo. While raising two children, she held many concerts with Shakuhachi, Koto, Cello, Tabla, and Sitar players in Northern California, as well as with members of the San Francisco Taiko Dojo.
Moving to Los Angeles in 1981, she composed and performed "Peace Song" for the event of the "Peace Day" arranged by Governor Brown. This song was often heard on KPFK Radio. She performed Jazzy Japanese Minyo and Latin music regularly at the "Comeback Inn," a Jazz Live Club.
In 1992, she moved to Colorado and managed the Westminster Dinner Theater and acted as a stage producer, while she held her own concerts.
