UW's "A... My Name is Alice" is "a boodle of laughs"

The University of Wyoming's 2011 Snowy Range Summer Theatre season closes with "A ... My Name Is Alice," a bright and lively musical revue that presents a funny, bawdy and insightful kaleidoscope of contemporary women.

Directed by Leigh Selting, "A ... My Name Is Alice" runs at 7:30 nightly July 12-16 inside the Fine Arts Center studio theatre. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens (60 and older) and $5 for students. For tickets, call (307) 766-6666 or go online at www.uwyo.edu/finearts .

Called "a boodle of laughs" (The New York Post) and "delightful" and "so sophisticated" (The New York Times), "A ... My Name Is Alice" is filled with life's ups, downs and in-betweens from a modern woman's perspective.

The five-woman cast takes on multiple roles to explore the many facets of contemporary women's lives through scenes, monologues and songs. They explore the horrors of parent/teacher conferences, the delights of a male strip club and the tragedy of losing a parent. The music ranges from 1960s doo-wop and wistful pop ballads to soul-filled rhythm and blues.

Originally produced by the Women's Project at the American Place Theatre in New York, "A...My Name Is Alice" played a long duration at the Village Gate Off Broadway and won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical Revue.

The revue was created by veteran directors Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd and involved a variety of comedy writers, lyricists and composers who contributed to the songs and sketches.

Amazing Arthur on stage June 25 at NIC Fest

The No Frills Theatre Company of Sheridan College is proud to present their spring production of A.R. Gurney's mad cap comedy "Sylvia" featuring some of Sheridan's favorite artists Jack Vernon, Gillian Malone, Dimitra Dugal and Ken Stellingwerf under the direction of Lillian and Gene Sager.

Sylvia is a romantic comedy, revolving around Greg who brings home a dog found in Central Park or who found him - bearing only the name "Sylvia" on her name tag. To Kate, his wife, Sylvia becomes a rival for affection. Kate obviously doesn't understand the relationship between man and dog. The marriage is put into serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious and touching complications...Well doggone it we don't want to spoil the ending...you'll just have come and find out what happens for yourself!  

"Noises Off" makes some noise in Cheyenne starting April 8

"Noises Off," a play by Michael Frayn known as one of the funniest plays of the late 20th century, will open on Friday, April 8, 7:30 p.m., at the Mary Godfrey Theatre in Cheyenne. Performance dates are April 8-10 and 15-17. Director of this Cheyenne Little Theatre Players production is Jim Rolf. Wyomingingarts staffers will be looking for our SPCR colleague Mike Corso in the role of Tim Allgood.

This classic backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, sexual dalliances, confusions, and errant plates of sardines, follows a hapless acting troupe who prove that whatever can go wrong -- on stage or off -- during the course of a disastrous provincial tour, will.

Tickets go on sale Feb. 16 for Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night" at Casper College

Tickets for the next Casper College Theatre production, Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” or “What You Will,” will go on sale to the general public on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

“Shakespeare’s charming romantic comedy about a pair of twins is just the show for the wintertime blues,” said Richard Burk, director.

The story tells the tale of twins Viola and Sebastian who become separated in a stormy shipwreck. “Presuming the other lost, they make their way through into Illyria, where they meet Duke Orsino, who loves the Lady Olivia, who will have none of him, but falls for Viola (disguised as “Cesario” the servant to Orsino). Meanwhile Olivia’s kinsman Sir Toby Belch and Maria, along with Feste the Fool, Sir Andrea Aguecheek, and Fabian all wreak havoc on poor puritanical Malvolio. This play is charming, farcical, cheerful, and fun,” said Burk.

The play will run February 23, 25, 26 and March 1 through 5 beginning each night at 7:30 p.m. on the McMurry Mainstage of the Gertrude Krampert Theatre Complex. Assisting Burk will be Sean McIntosh with scenic and lighting design and Douglas Garland with costume design and makeup.

Tickets for “Twelfth Night,” or “What You Will” are $12 for adults and $10 for children and teens, ages 5 to 18. Tickets can be purchased at the Krampert Theatre Complex box office between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, by phone at 268-2500, or one hour before each performance, for that performance only.

Comedian Eddie Ifft at UW Nov. 12

Looking for a good laugh? Comedian Eddie Ifft performs Friday, Nov. 12, at 9 p.m. in the University of Wyoming Union ballroom. The Friday Night Fever event is free and open to UW students.

Ifft was one of the five finalists in the recent MySpace/Sierra Mist Stand Up or Sit Down Challenge. He has appeared on NBC's hit show "Last Comic Standing II," Comedy Central's "Premium Blend," BET's "Comic View" and "Chelsea Lately." Ifft has performed with Dave Chapelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Chris Rock and Robin Williams.

"Fuddy Meers" opens Sept. 28 at UW

The University of Wyoming Department of Theater and Dance opens the 2010-2011 production season with David Lindsay-Abaire's hilariously unpredictable comedy, "Fuddy Meers."

Directed by assistant professor John O'Hagan, "Fuddy Meers" runs Sept. 28 through Oct. 2 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. on the Fine Arts Main Stage in Laramie. "Fuddy Meers" had its premiere in 1999 and put playwright Lindsay-Abaire on the map. Critics called the play "one of the funniest shows I've ever seen," "bubbly fun" and "a giant step toward dispelling current pessimism about the state of the theater." Lindsay-Abaire won the Pulitzer Prize in 2007 for "Rabbit Hole."

This wacky and poignant comedy follows Claire, a receptive if bemused woman with a rare form of amnesia. Claire awakens as a blank slate every morning on which her family must imprint the essential facts of her life.

For Claire, it's one harrowing and hilarious turn after another on a roller coaster ride of trying to decipher the truth of her life.

"The play is a tremendous amount of fun. While Fuddy Meers asks some probing questions -- which I hope will lead to some good discussions -- it is essentially a farce, a dark farce that is great fun to watch," O'Hagan says.

"Slice of Pie" screening Aug. 27 at UW

Accomplished Second City Theater alumni Rick and Laura Hall will show the new original short film, "Slice of Pie" at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, on the University of Wyoming Fine Arts Center Main Stage. The event is free and open to the public.

The film is gleaned from Rick Hall's small-town stories called "Spellbinding" published by The New York Times. "Slice of Pie" is a humorous and heartfelt romantic comedy about the sweetness of exploring life's smaller moments.

The UW Department of Theatre and Dance hosts the Halls this week as part of its Guest Artist Series, which is sponsored by the Wyoming State Legislature through the Excellence in Higher Education Endowment. They will work with student performers and playwrights, presenting workshops on acting, musical theater, auditioning and playwriting.

Rick Hall is a writer/actor/producer who spent many years on the Chicago theater scene before joining Hollywood's film and television community. He has been involved with several films and a variety of television shows, such as "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "24," "Without a Trace," "Seinfeld," "Saving Grace" and "Everybody Loves Raymond."

Laura Hall is probably best known as the improvisational pianist on television's "Whose Line Is It Anyway." She also performed on "The Drew Carey Show" live episodes, and has toured the country doing live performances with "Drew Carey and the Improv All Stars."
